A devastating tragedy unfolded in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon when a 16-year-old gunman forced his way into an elementary school and opened fire. The violent attack claimed five lives, including three young students, an adult teacher, and the teenage shooter.
Deadly Attack at Silver Rail Elementary
The incident occurred at Silver Rail Elementary School, a campus catering to children from kindergarten through fifth grade. According to law enforcement officials, the 16-year-old shooter was a resident of Bend. He gained unauthorized entry into the educational building by firing multiple rounds directly into the locked exterior doors, breaking through to reach the interior hallways.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz stated that the initial emergency notification reached dispatchers at 12:59 PM, just moments before 1:00 PM. That first 911 call came from a person sitting inside an automobile parked right outside the school grounds, reporting that an armed individual had fired a long gun at their vehicle. Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene in response.
Casualties and Critical Injuries
Details released by Police Chief Mike Krantz confirmed that the three children who lost their lives were aged 5, 8, and 11 years old. A school teacher was also killed in the gunfire. In addition to the fatalities, two people suffered grievous wounds and were transported to a nearby medical facility in critical condition: a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher. Police noted that the overall death toll could potentially rise as medical staff treat the wounded.
Gunman Found Dead as Investigation Unfolds
Bend Police spokesperson Sheila Miller explained that shortly after law enforcement officers arrived at the campus, the shooter sustained a gunshot wound and collapsed inside the facility. Responding officers located the suspect deceased on the premises within minutes of the alarm. Investigators have not yet established whether the fatal shot was fired by confronting police officers, by an armed bystander on the scene, or if the teenage gunman took his own life.
The school was immediately placed on lockdown and secured following the shooting. Data from the Oregon Department of Education indicates that the institution, situated roughly 100 miles (160 kilometers) southeast of Portland, had an enrollment of 459 students during the previous school year. Authorities are actively investigating the teenager's motives and how he acquired the firearm.
