Political friction has intensified in the United States as billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk faces sharp accusations from lawmakers over his massive financial backing of political campaigns. Senator Bernie Sanders has openly called out Musk, alleging that the business tycoon is effectively using his immense fortune to buy political influence and shape election outcomes. According to Sanders, the substantial investments made to support Donald Trump’s presidential campaign yielded massive financial returns for Musk's private enterprises. Simultaneously, Musk remains a focal point of discussion regarding his persistent efforts to introduce his satellite internet venture, Starlink, into the Indian telecommunications market.
Massive Wealth Growth and Campaign Spending
Detailing the financial figures, Bernie Sanders pointed out that Elon Musk poured 290 million dollars into Trump's election campaign. He further asserted that following Trump's electoral victory, Musk's net worth experienced a staggering surge of 696 billion dollars, propelling him to become the world's first trillionaire. Alongside these financial milestones, Musk’s companies secured lucrative government contracts. Space Exploration Technologies Corp., widely known as SpaceX, received a historic 1.6 billion dollar contract from NASA. Furthermore, in July 2026, SpaceX secured another massive 1.6 billion dollar agreement from the United States Space Force to launch 18 Falcon 9 rockets, validating concerns regarding corporate influence.
Pumping Millions into Midterm Elections
Expanding his political footprint beyond the presidential race, Elon Musk is now directing hundreds of millions of dollars toward maintaining Republican control in Congress. Sanders criticized this trend, highlighting that Musk is spending 366 million dollars to sustain the party's dominance, tying it directly to the growing clout of ultra-wealthy individuals in American politics. Reports indicate that Musk has disbursed 276 million dollars to right-wing political action committees and aligned organizations since July. This includes 158 million dollars channeled through the Senate Leadership Fund to support Republican candidates. Through these immense contributions, Musk has emerged as the single largest private donor ahead of the midterm elections scheduled for November 3.
Justifications from America PAC
Defending the heavy political contributions, Andrew Romeo, a spokesperson for Elon Musk’s political organization America PAC, stated that the financial backing is essential to prevent the Democratic Party from gaining full control of Congress. Republican candidates are currently navigating several political headwinds ahead of the midterm elections, including voter discontent over inflation and shifting popularity metrics. To bridge these strategic gaps, Musk has been heavily injecting capital into targeted races. This entire chain of events has reignited a broader public debate over whether the unchecked financial power of mega-industrialists exerts an outsized and unhealthy influence on legislative policies and electoral politics.
Starlink Ambitions and Regulatory Hurdles in India
Amidst ongoing debates concerning his domestic political spending, Elon Musk has also remained in the spotlight over his ambition to launch the Starlink satellite internet service in India. Following setbacks in markets like China and Russia, Musk has been eager to establish a foothold in the massive Indian consumer base. He previously posted online, arguing that introducing Starlink to India would provide customers with greater internet connectivity choices and enhance market competition. He also suggested that local business entities were attempting to block his entry. However, the Indian government firmly dismissed these allegations, clarifying that any delays are strictly a result of necessary regulatory compliance and stringent national security requirements.
