The ruling National Democratic Alliance in Andhra Pradesh, led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, has registered an overwhelming victory across urban local body elections in the state. The joint front comprising the Telugu Desam Party, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan's Jana Sena Party, and the Bharatiya Janata Party dealt a severe blow to the opposition YSR Congress Party, reversing earlier political equations. Out of the 13 municipal corporations contested, the coalition captured 9, while also securing 75 out of 86 municipalities and nagar panchayats across the state. Political observers view these comprehensive outcomes as a major boost to Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu's authority and governance in Andhra Pradesh.
Court Interventions and Uncontested Victories
Legal challenges prevented elections in two civic bodies, namely the Srikakulam Municipal Corporation and the Amadalavalasa Municipality, where court cases stalled the voting process. In the municipalities of Nellimarla and Salur, rebel TDP candidates contested independently and successfully secured the chairperson positions. Reflecting strong local consolidation before voting began, coalition candidates for the post of chairperson won unopposed in 17 municipalities and nagar panchayats. Furthermore, counting trends across several other civic entities indicated persistent leads for alliance candidates as ballots were tallied.
Major Upheaval in YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's Home District
The most consequential shift unfolded in YSR Kadapa district, the traditional bastion and home district of former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. Long recognized as an impregnable stronghold of the YSRCP, the district saw the party suffer an unprecedented decline. Across the district's 279 municipal wards, YSRCP managed to win only seven seats. In sharp contrast, the TDP-led coalition swept into power across the district, winning six municipalities completely unopposed and dislodging the opposition from its core territorial base.
Opposition Defeated in Pulivendula Assembly Segment
Even within YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's personal legislative assembly constituency of Pulivendula, the YSRCP suffered a decisive defeat. In the election for the municipal chairperson post in Pulivendula, TDP candidate Tugutla Geetha Kumari won by an emphatic margin of 13,875 votes. Of the 20 municipal wards where polling took place in the town, the ruling alliance captured 17, leaving the YSRCP with merely three seats. Despite widespread losses, the YSRCP prevented a total shutout by securing victories in the Anantapur Municipal Corporation and Nandikotkur Municipality, while also maintaining early leads in Naidupeta and Bethamcherla.
Total Shift Compared to the 2021 Electoral Mandate
The current results mark an extraordinary political turnaround compared to the urban civic polls of 2021. In that cycle, the YSRCP dominated state municipal politics by winning all 13 municipal corporations and taking 86 out of 87 municipalities. The latest outcomes have completely flipped that balance of power, transferring local urban administration firmly into the hands of the TDP-led alliance. Following the victory, TDP state president Palla Srinivasa Rao attributed the resounding mandate to public faith in the leadership of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and Minister Nara Lokesh. Minister Nara Lokesh remarked that this mandate represents a solemn duty of public service rather than an occasion for mere celebration. In response to the sweep, the YSRCP raised serious objections, accusing the administration of manipulation and irregularities throughout the election process.
