In an increasingly crowded market for consumer artificial intelligence tools, Meta's standalone AI companion, Muse, has achieved a rare milestone in the United States. Following its debut in September, the application reached 10.2 million U.S. downloads within its initial 40 days of availability, contributing to a total worldwide figure of 10.9 million installs. Historically, only 11 other smartphone applications have managed to draw 10 million American users over an equivalent post-launch window.
Joining an Elite Category of Fast-Growing Apps
According to Kara Lee, Senior Insights Analyst at Sensor Tower, the last application to reach this rapid adoption threshold in the United States was Meta's own microblogging service Threads, which launched in July 2023. Beyond Threads, the short list of apps achieving that launch trajectory is populated almost entirely by viral mobile gaming hits, including titles such as Fortnite, PUBG Mobile, and Pokémon GO. Outside the gaming industry, only Threads and Disney+ had previously managed to secure entry into this exclusive 40-day download club. The arrival of Muse marks the first time a pure consumer AI agent has matched that early domestic adoption pace.
The Weight of Meta's Scale and Heavy Ad Investment
A primary driver behind this rapid expansion is Meta's ability to cross-promote new software offerings across its established social graph. With an ecosystem serving 3.6 billion daily active users across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, the corporation holds an unmatched organic funnel. Just as Threads was engineered on top of Instagram's existing social connections and cross-promoted inside primary feeds, Muse has received extensive placement throughout the company's network.
Beyond native cross-promotion, Meta has also backed the release with substantial paid marketing resources. Sensor Tower data reveals that Meta directed 39% of its entire promotional budget toward advertising Muse during October, representing a steep jump from the 23% allocation observed in September. As a result of this aggressive push, Muse climbed to the position of the 21st largest commercial brand in the United States measured by advertising impressions in October, up considerably from its 73rd rank recorded in September.
Higher Retention Rates and Daily Active Engagement
While massive promotional spending can easily generate initial installs, maintaining long-term engagement once early novelty fades is traditionally much more difficult for software developers. However, early operational metrics indicate that Muse is managing to hold onto users more effectively than rival conversational agents such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok.
In the domestic U.S. market, Muse registered a 30% user retention rate after seven days and preserved a 23% retention rate after 14 days. In comparison, competing AI companion applications have sustained an average of 19% retention at the seven-day mark and 16% after two weeks, based on market tracking metrics. Engagement volume has likewise expanded in tandem with installs. Daily active users on the application hit 2.5 million for the first time on October 16, marking a 15% increase compared to the prior week.
Outpacing Rivals in Domestic Launch Speed
Designed to manage an assortment of everyday tasks on behalf of users, Muse immediately gained significant traction upon release, climbing swiftly to the summit of app marketplace charts. When evaluating domestic launch trajectories over the identical 40-day timeframe, Muse handily surpassed rival services. OpenAI's ChatGPT secured approximately 3.7 million U.S. downloads over its initial 40 days on the market. Meanwhile, Grok accumulated around 500,000 domestic downloads and Anthropic's Claude registered 200,000 installs within their respective introductory 40-day windows.
On an international basis, ChatGPT maintains an edge in total historical volume, having amassed roughly 15 million global downloads across its first 40 days. However, direct global comparisons reflect distribution differences rather than strictly consumer appetite. Muse has remained restricted to users in the United States and Canada so far, whereas ChatGPT launched across several major international territories simultaneously. Japan alone accounted for 25% of all global installs for ChatGPT during its first 40 days, alongside heavy early uptake across Germany and Brazil.
Sustained Dominance Across Mobile Marketplaces
Throughout its introductory run, Muse has maintained steady leadership across primary distribution platforms. On the U.S. Apple App Store, the AI app occupied the top spot on every day of its post-launch period with the exception of October 19, when live-streaming platform Kick momentarily surpassed it before Muse reclaimed the lead by Tuesday. Concurrently, Muse has preserved its position as the number one application on Google Play for 30 consecutive days.
