The humanitarian situation in Nepal remains critically severe following widespread floods and devastating landslides caused by relentless rain. On the sixth consecutive day of the catastrophe, emergency personnel from the Nepali Army and the national police force continue executing large-scale search and rescue missions across the worst-affected regions. Official reports confirm that the death toll has climbed to 804, while more than 2,500 people remain missing under layers of mud and debris. Rescuers have managed to evacuate over 9,500 individuals from dangerous zones to temporary shelters. Due to severe decomposition, identifying victims recovered from the rubble has become exceptionally challenging. Consequently, authorities are gathering DNA samples from the deceased prior to carrying out swift burials. In response to the crisis, neighbouring China has stepped forward with financial relief package to assist Nepal in handling the fallout of this natural disaster.
Breakdown of China’s Financial Assistance to Nepal
To support emergency operations and disaster recovery, China has committed a total financial aid package of 2.2 million US dollars to Nepal. Alongside the funding commitment, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Qiang conveyed their formal condolences over the extensive loss of life and property damage caused by the floods. The Nepalese government officially disclosed the receipt of this international assistance on Monday. The impact of the severe weather system extended beyond Nepal's borders into the neighbouring Tibet region, where authorities reported 16 fatalities and confirmed that 550 individuals remain unaccounted for.
Official Handover of Aid by the Chinese Ambassador
Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Zhang Maoming, formally met with Nepal's Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle to complete the transfer of the relief funds. During the meeting, Ambassador Zhang handed over a government check worth 35 crore Nepalese rupees, which equals 2 million US dollars. Furthermore, the Red Cross Society of China extended an additional 200,000 US dollars (2 lakh USD) in dedicated humanitarian aid. Speaking during the handover ceremony, Ambassador Zhang re-emphasised Beijing's solidarity with Kathmandu, assuring that Nepal is not standing alone during this adversity and that China remains steadfastly supportive of its neighbour.
State of Nepal’s Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund
In response to the catastrophic devastation, the Nepalese government established the Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund to channel domestic and international donations toward flood victims. Contributions have been pouring into the central fund from various institutions, public donations, and foreign entities. According to official disclosures, total collections in the disaster relief fund have already crossed 5 billion Nepalese rupees. The government plans to utilize these resources primarily to rebuild destroyed housing, provide essential medical support, and restore damaged infrastructure across the affected districts.
