A major political shift has unfolded in Assam as the Bharatiya Janata Party captured the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency from the Congress in a keenly contested parliamentary by-election. BJP nominee Devasish Sharma established a commanding lead over his opponents during the vote counting process, effectively rewriting the electoral equation in the constituency. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the outcome, describing it as a decisive triumph that reflects widespread public confidence.
Breakthrough in a Non-Traditional Territory
The Nagaon constituency has historically not been counted among the traditional bastions of the BJP. Overcoming that challenge, the ruling party managed to turn the tide, steering its candidate Devasish Sharma to a remarkable victory. Highlighting this milestone on X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the BJP achieved this decisive outcome under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a seat previously held by the Congress.
The Chief Minister pointed out that the election dynamic pushed the Congress down to third position, demonstrating a sharp decline in its standing within the seat. He noted that the mandate underlines Prime Minister Narendra Modi's enduring popularity across diverse communities, along with the continued faith of Assam's electorate in the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
Vote Counts and Massive Lead Margin
Official figures released by the Election Commission indicated that Devasish Sharma had amassed 6,97,177 votes by 6.54 pm on counting day. By that stage, the BJP contestant had established an unassailable lead of more than 1.5 lakh votes over competing candidates. Although counting operations were continuing at the time, the substantial margin confirmed a decisive outcome in favour of the ruling party.
Expressing deep gratitude to the electorate of Nagaon, Chief Minister Sarma reaffirmed his government's pledge to accelerate development initiatives across Assam with renewed vigour. He also praised the dedication of grassroots party workers who campaigned vigorously across the constituency under the direction of party president Nitin Nabin.
Criticism Directed at Opposition Leadership
The loss in Nagaon has sparked sharp reactions against the Congress organisation. BJP MLA Pradyut Bordoloi launched a scathing critique of the Congress leadership, asserting that the party has become completely alienated from its grassroots workers and core support base.
Remarking on the outcome, Bordoloi stated that the verdict offers clear evidence regarding the hollowness of the Congress leadership. With the BJP claiming a seat outside its conventional sphere of influence and relegating the former incumbent party to third place, the by-election result marks a significant realignment in the state's political arena.
