Voters across Assam's Nagaon parliamentary constituency exercised their democratic choice on Tuesday during the crucial Lok Sabha by-election. Election authorities noted that approximately 76 percent of registered electors had cast their ballots by 5 pm. The overall participation percentage is expected to climb further, as citizens who were queued inside designated polling stations before the scheduled deadline were permitted to vote. The entire process concluded without any disruption across the constituency.
Smooth Voting Across Eight Assembly Segments Despite Minor EVM Snags
Balloting commenced at 7 am across each of the constituency's eight assembly segments. While a few polling booths encountered technical glitches involving electronic voting machines, election personnel promptly swapped the affected units to keep the voting uninterrupted. Officials confirmed that no major untoward incidents took place anywhere during the voting hours.
Voter Participation Breakdown by Assembly Segment
Participation figures varied across individual assembly segments, with Samaguri recording the highest voter turnout at 80.22 percent. Laharighat followed closely behind with 78.88 percent, while Dhing registered 77.93 percent. Rupohihat posted a turnout of 77.67 percent, and Jagiroad stood at 76.67 percent. Meanwhile, Morigaon recorded 72.85 percent, Nagaon-Batadroba saw 72.01 percent, and Raha registered the lowest participation at 70.29 percent.
Contestants in the Fray and High-Profile Ballots
Altogether 15 candidates are competing in this bypoll, though the primary battle centers around Devashish Sharma, Sibamoni Bora, and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal. BJP nominee Devashish Sharma, a former IAS officer, cast his ballot at Mayong Higher Secondary School in the Jagiroad assembly constituency. In the Nagaon-Batadraba segment, Congress candidate and former MLA Sibamoni Bora exercised her franchise at Majgaon Primary School.
Electoral Demographics and Political Significance
The total electorate eligible for the by-election stood at 19,02,009 citizens. This electorate encompasses 9,58,595 male voters, 9,43,364 female voters, and 50 individuals belonging to the third-gender category. Known historically for tight electoral finishes, the seat is witnessing a fierce contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress. The BJP is seeking to capture the constituency from Congress following the resignation of former Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who subsequently switched allegiance to the BJP. Vote counting is slated for October 9.
