Railway Protection Force personnel intercepted 57 suspected Bangladeshi nationals at Kamakhya railway station in Guwahati on Thursday evening. The individuals were found travelling aboard the Brahmaputra Mail as the train pulled into the station located in the Maligaon area. Authorities suspect that members of this group had fled from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, though detailed background checks regarding their exact identities and local networks are currently underway.
Intensified Crackdown on Illegal Infiltration Across Guwahati
This major interception follows a series of targeted operations across Guwahati over the past 48 hours targeting individuals suspected of unauthorized entry into India. Senior police officer Kulendra Nath Deka confirmed that at least 17 Bangladeshi nationals had been arrested in separate police actions across the city during this period. Law enforcement agencies have significantly increased surveillance at major transport nodes and transit routes throughout the urban corridor.
Interrogations Uncover Meghalaya Route and City Hideouts
The wider network began unravelling on Tuesday when authorities apprehended five suspected Bangladeshi nationals from the general coach of the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express during routine inspections near Paltan Bazar railway station. Preliminary police inquiries revealed that the five entered India via Dawki in Meghalaya before arriving in Guwahati on October 5, where they subsequently stayed at a local hotel.
Questioning of one of the arrested individuals provided key leads that directed police directly to the establishment. Investigators reviewed closed-circuit television recordings along with other evidentiary material from the premises, leading to a formal criminal case being registered at Pan Bazar Police Station. Detectives are now scrutinizing every aspect of the transit corridor, tracing the broader syndicate behind the border crossing, and tracking the planned movements of the detainees across Indian territory.
