Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain is set to establish her own sports training centre following a major decision by the Assam government. Officials announced on Friday that four bighas of land near Guwahati have been sanctioned to help the ace pugilist set up a dedicated boxing academy.
The designated plot is situated in Hudumpur village, functioning under the Palasbari revenue circle. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the cabinet outcome during a media briefing at Lok Sewa Bhawan, noting that the land transfer would occur at a nominal rate of Re 1.
Fostering Grassroots Boxing in the Northeast
The state aims to elevate athletic standards and nurture potential contenders for world-level tournaments through this initiative. Writing on X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted that this step paves the way for the Lovlina Boxing Academy near Guwahati, giving budding talent from Assam access to high-calibre preparation to represent the country on major global stages.
Authorities emphasized that the upcoming setup will be instrumental in discovering promising fighters across the state and moulding them into future champions.
Recent Continental Gold and Historic Milestone
The announcement arrives shortly after Borgohain scripted another triumph on the international stage. Competing at the 2026 Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, she clinched the gold medal in the women’s 75kg category. Her victory came on October 2 after defeating China’s Bao Ziyi with a clean 5-0 sweep in the title clash.
By claiming that victory, Borgohain etched her name in sporting history as just the second Indian woman boxer to secure an Asian Games gold medal, joining MC Mary Kom who first accomplished the landmark in 2014.
A Decorated Career and Official Recognition
Borgohain had previously earned widespread international acclaim by taking home a bronze medal from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Expanding her continental accolades, she also claimed silver in the identical 75kg division during the 2022 Asian Games staged in Hangzhou, China.
Celebrating her latest continental triumph, Sarma felicitated Borgohain on October 6 at Lok Sewa Bhawan, presenting her with a cash reward of Rs 50 lakh. The Chief Minister hailed her performance as an immense source of national pride that will motivate up-and-coming athletes across India.
