The upcoming Assamese feature film Mahabahu The Brahmaputra is scheduled to hit the big screen on September 11. Centered around the mighty Brahmaputra River, the narrative delves into the harsh realities and daily struggles faced by communities residing along its vast and unpredictable banks.
Production Background and Delays
The project has been produced under the banner of Monarijit Entertainment in association with Louhitya Arts. Pranjal Pratim Chetia has written and directed the feature while also essaying the male lead. The movie was initially slated to premiere on June 19, but unavoidable circumstances, most notably the severe flood situation across Assam, forced a postponement.
Title Significance and Seven-Year Journey
According to director Pranjal Pratim Chetia, the chosen title reflects the sheer magnitude of the river and serves as the core pillar of the plot. He noted that the term carries an immense scale that instantly communicates the essence of the project to viewers. Bringing this vision to life required a challenging seven-year journey filled with hurdles ranging from the COVID-19 pandemic to devastating floods before finalizing the current September 11 release slot.
Scientific Expedition and Flood Realities
Set primarily against the backdrop of Sivasagar, the plot follows a scientific team navigating the turbulent currents of the river. The natural waterway emerges on screen as both a breathtaking spectacle and an unforgiving force that tests human endurance. Alongside this journey, the screenplay weaves in the grim reality of seasonal floods that disrupt regional lives.
Ties to Dr. Bhupen Hazarika
Chetia pointed out that the word Mahabahu shares a deep association with legendary musician Dr. Bhupen Hazarika. As a tribute, the first public screening of the feature took place on the birth anniversary of Hazarika. The project also benefits from the vocal contributions of Zubeen Garg, lending a fresh and distinct presentation style to the overall cinematic experience.
