Law enforcement authorities in Assam's Kamrup Metropolitan district took two individuals into custody on Saturday for allegedly transporting wildlife parts. The operation was executed in the Medhikuchi area following specific intelligence inputs regarding illegal wildlife trafficking. A specialized law enforcement unit, spearheaded by the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police along with the Officer-in-Charge of the Sonapur Police Station, successfully laid a trap to apprehend the two suspects at the location.
Suspect Identification and Transit Route
The detained individuals were officially identified as Moga Doye, aged 48, hailing from the Lower Siang district, and Nokphua Wangsa, aged 44, a resident of the Changlang district. Investigators revealed that the contraband consisted of six musk deer pods with a cumulative weight of approximately 158 grams. According to law enforcement findings, the illegal consignment originated in Arunachal Pradesh and was in the process of being routed through Assam for transportation outside the state boundaries.

Endangered musk deer are legally shielded under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which imposes severe penalties for unlawful hunting and commercial trading of protected wildlife. Musk, which is an aromatic secretion obtained directly from the gland of the male musk deer, is heavily utilized in the production of high-end perfumes and fragrances. This substance is widely recognized for commanding exorbitant prices within clandestine black markets. Authorities noted that the seized material holds substantial monetary value within the international illegal trade ecosystem.
