Security forces operating in Upper Assam have thwarted an alleged recruitment move by the banned insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I). A local youth from Charaideo district was intercepted while reportedly travelling toward Nagaland's Mon district, where investigators believe he was attempting to make direct contact with the outlawed organization and formally enter its ranks.
Intelligence-Led Interception Near the Border
Officials identified the apprehended individual as Shyamal Danah, a resident of Thulai Chuk, Mahmora, Alikiner in Charaideo district. Security agencies had developed actionable intelligence regarding Danah's movement toward the neighbouring state of Nagaland. Investigators suspect that his journey to Mon district was specifically arranged to establish a physical link with insurgent operatives.
According to official statements, Danah had been functioning as an overground associate for ULFA-I and harboured intentions of joining the armed faction. Acting swiftly on the intelligence inputs, a coordinated operation was launched jointly by the Charaideo Police and personnel from the 20 Assam Rifles. A specialized operational team headed by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) alongside the Deputy Superintendent of Police (South) tracked down Danah, intercepted his travel, and brought him back into Charaideo jurisdiction.
Interrogation Underway at Sonari Police Station
Following his apprehension, Danah was transported to Sonari Police Station for detailed questioning. Investigating officers are focusing on uncovering the precise mechanics of his association with ULFA-I, his planned rendezvous points across the border, and the identities of local collaborators or handlers who facilitated his travel logistics and logistical arrangements.
Sustained Crackdown on Insurgent Networks Across Upper Assam
This latest apprehension forms part of a wider, sustained security crackdown aimed at dismantling the support infrastructure, extortion rings, and recruitment pipelines of ULFA-I across Upper Assam. Security agencies have intensified regional counter-insurgency operations over recent months to prevent underground elements from reviving their presence.
In June, an operation conducted jointly by the Assam Police and central intelligence agencies led to the arrest of two suspected cadres in Tinsukia. That raid resulted in the recovery of assault rifles, ammunition caches, live grenades, and related tactical gear. Earlier this month, law enforcement authorities in Dibrugarh took suspected ULFA-I linkmen into custody during an extortion probe, prompting investigators to dissect the group's financial conduits and overground facilitators. Additionally, on September 14, security forces apprehended another suspected overground worker in Charaideo connected to illicit extortion demands.
ULFA remains designated as an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Investigative agencies are continuing their probe into Danah's background and the full network surrounding his attempted entry into Nagaland.
