Highway commuters across India can now switch their FASTag issuer bank without peeling the existing physical sticker off their vehicle windshield. The National Highways Authority of India, known as NHAI, has made the OneTag portability framework functional, allowing motorists to transition smoothly between banking partners while retaining their original tag identification and vehicle registration details intact.
Official Launch at Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai
The digital initiative was unveiled by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari during the Global Fintech Fest 2026 held in Mumbai. OneTag operates as a collaborative rollout developed by Indian Highways Management Company Limited, or IHMCL, an entity promoted by NHAI, alongside the National Payments Corporation of India, or NPCI. The deployment aims to widen the suite of digital services available to national highway travelers and introduce seamless interoperability in electronic toll collection.
The portability feature was officially deployed on the Rajmargyatra mobile application on September 17, giving motor vehicle owners immediate access to digital account porting. Through this mechanism, NETC FASTag holders gain complete freedom to choose their preferred banking partner directly through their mobile devices.
Eliminating the Hassle of Closing Accounts and Replacing Tags
Prior to the arrival of the OneTag system, switching from one FASTag bank to another was a cumbersome multi-step procedure. Vehicle owners dissatisfied with their current provider had to formally terminate their active tag account, undergo an entirely new onboarding cycle with another institution, and physically procure a fresh sticker. That transition often involved peeling off the adhered tag, waiting for courier delivery or branch collection, and facing potential windshield residue or activation delays.
OneTag removes these obstacles by treating the tag as an open, portable identifier. Following a successful transfer, the vehicle registration number and the unique FASTag ID remain exactly as they were. Motorists do not need to discard their functional sticker or affix a replacement tag simply because they are moving their linked banking relationship to a competing lender.
Step-by-Step Portability Workflow on Rajmargyatra App
FASTag users intending to initiate bank migration can execute the entire request using the NHAI Rajmargyatra mobile application. The operational workflow consists of six distinct stages
- Step 1: Launch the Rajmargyatra mobile application on your device and complete the user login.
- Step 2: Input your official vehicle registration number to run an automated eligibility check.
- Step 3: Receive a six-digit Mobile Verification Code, or MVC, sent directly by your current tag issuer bank.
- Step 4: Enter the verification code to execute the necessary authentication and authorization requirements.
- Step 5: Browse the available financial institutions and select your preferred new FASTag issuer bank.
- Step 6: Complete customer identity verification and wallet onboarding protocols required by the chosen bank.
Mandatory Fresh KYC Requirements for New Bank Onboarding
While the underlying FASTag identifier remains identical on the vehicle glass, switching financial institutions requires full regulatory onboarding with the incoming entity. Procedural guidelines for the facility specify that users must complete a fresh KYC process when moving to a new issuer bank.
Consequently, motorists should keep their identification records and requisite paperwork ready to submit during the new issuer's customer verification sequence. Once the onboarding verification and wallet creation conclude successfully, the migration is finalized, and future electronic toll deductions automatically route through the newly assigned banking wallet.
