The Indian automobile market delivered an exceptional performance during August 2026. With the festive season approaching, domestic demand accelerated significantly, allowing top car manufacturers to post strong double-digit growth. Major industry players including Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Hyundai released robust figures for the month. Within the passenger vehicle segment, utility vehicles recorded the highest demand among buyers across the country.
Electric Vehicles and Export Trends
Electric vehicles also witnessed healthy growth during the period. Overall, the industry showed a remarkable improvement compared to the previous year. Despite the surge in domestic sales, certain companies experienced a decline in exports, though the overall volume remained positive. This underlying trend is expected to strengthen further in the coming months, particularly during the festive celebrations. Market focus will continue to remain centered on SUVs and EVs. A closer look reveals the performance of the top five car companies last month.
Maruti Suzuki recorded total sales of 2,19,220 units in August 2026, marking an increase of 21.33 percent compared to the previous year. Domestic passenger vehicle sales stood at 1,76,971 units, registering an annual growth of 34.81 percent. The utility vehicle segment accounted for 79,045 units sold. The company also surpassed the milestone of 10 lakh units in the first five months of the current fiscal year. While exports saw a slight dip, domestic demand remained remarkably strong.
Tata Motors reached a domestic passenger vehicle sales figure of 65,253 units, achieving an impressive growth of 59.15 percent. Total passenger vehicle sales stood at 67,753 units for the month. Electric vehicle sales nearly doubled to reach 16,549 units. Commercial vehicles also recorded a 49 percent growth with 44,411 units sold. Popular models like Punch, Nexon, and others contributed significantly to these numbers.
Mahindra's SUV sales reached 59,257 units, marking a massive 50 percent growth. Total vehicle sales increased by 42 percent to 107,648 units. Good growth was also registered in the LCV and three-wheeler segments. Exports surged by 71 percent to reach 6,054 units. Strong demand was continuously driven by popular lineups including Scorpio, Thar, and the XUV series.
Hyundai recorded its highest-ever domestic figure in August by selling 54,396 units, achieving an annual growth of 23.62 percent. Total sales including exports stood at 65,796 units. The SUV portfolio, led by Creta, played a primary role in this achievement. Although exports dipped, domestic performance remained rock solid. The company's domestic growth for the April to August period stood at 12.6 percent.
