Indian electric vehicles have cemented their footprint on the global stage, with Europe emerging as the premier destination for the country's EV exports during the first quarter of the 2026-27 financial year. Fresh data released by the commerce ministry highlights a massive surge in electric car shipments from India, driven by the growing international acceptance of Made in India electric vehicles and the nation's rise as a crucial manufacturing hub for sustainable mobility solutions.
Massive Jump in Export Revenue and Volume
During the quarter under review, export revenue generated from electric cars skyrocketed from USD 22.2 million in the corresponding period of the previous year to reach USD 369 million. Meanwhile, the total vehicle shipment volume multiplied exponentially from 1,309 units up to 10,802 units. This remarkable progress reflects the expanding global competitiveness and manufacturing capability of the Indian automotive sector.
Spain Emerges as the Largest Market for Indian EVs
Among European destinations, Spain stood out as the single largest market for Indian electric vehicles, with exports surging to USD 146.4 million. This single country accounted for roughly 40 percent of India's total exports in this category. Data revealed that a total of 4,007 electric cars were shipped to Spain during the quarter, making it the top destination in terms of both financial value and shipment volume.
Substantial Imports by the UK and Other European Nations
The UK established itself as the second-largest market, recording imports worth USD 78.7 million compared to virtually zero shipments in the same quarter last year. According to official data, the export volume jumped from just a single car to 2,646 vehicles, illustrating the deepening penetration of Indian-made electric cars into one of Europe's most advanced EV markets. Several other European nations also recorded strong demand, with Germany importing USD 25.1 million, Norway USD 21.1 million, and Denmark USD 21 million. Additional demand came from Belgium at USD 12.9 million, the Netherlands at USD 12 million, Greece at USD 3.8 million, Italy at USD 2.7 million, Sweden at USD 2.1 million, and Poland at USD 1.6 million.
Expansion into Asia-Pacific and Latin America
Beyond Europe, India successfully widened its export footprint across Asia-Pacific markets. Japan imported electric cars worth USD 13.4 million, while shipments were also dispatched to Israel at USD 2.8 million, Australia at USD 2.7 million, Singapore at USD 1.7 million, Taiwan at USD 1.3 million, and South Korea. While traditional neighbors like Nepal remained steady destinations with USD 8.1 million in imports, the broader shift toward advanced Western markets marks a notable evolution in India's EV export profile. Simultaneously, fresh commercial avenues opened up in Latin America, where Brazil imported Indian electric vehicles worth USD 2.4 million, Colombia accounted for USD 1 million, Chile for USD 0.4 million, and Costa Rica for USD 0.5 million.
