A high-profile political gathering in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district turned into a nightmare for a local politician after unidentified thieves took advantage of heavy crowds to pull off a daring theft. The incident unfolded at the Sakri Saraiya Canal Chowk within the jurisdiction of the Turki police station area during a grand welcoming ceremony organized for Health Minister Nishant Kumar, who is the son of former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Amid the celebratory atmosphere, JDU leader Rajesh Mandal lost his expensive gold chain. The brazen theft has triggered panic in the locality, prompting local law enforcement to launch an intensive investigation.
Chaos and Rush to Offer Garlands
According to available details, a massive welcoming event had been arranged at Sakri Chowk to greet Health Minister Nishant Kumar upon his arrival in Muzaffarpur. As soon as the minister's motorcade reached the venue, a large crowd of party workers, supporters, and onlookers swarmed the area. The intense eagerness among attendees to greet the minister and put garlands around his neck created a chaotic environment marked by heavy jostling and shoving. Taking full advantage of this confusion, JDU leader Rajesh Mandal, a resident of Ladaura village in the Kurhani block, pushed through the crowd to honor the minister.
Discovering the Missing Chain After the Welcome
Rajesh Mandal successfully welcomed the minister, but when he reached for his neck after the event concluded, he realized his valuable gold chain was missing. The sudden realization left him stunned, sending him into a frantic search of the immediate surroundings. Overcome with anxiety, he rushed directly to the local police station, where he met the duty officer and narrated the entire sequence of events.
34 Grams of Gold Valued at Rs 7 Lakh
The perpetrators managed to lift the chain with extreme precision amidst the commotion. According to Rajesh Mandal, the stolen gold chain weighed 34 grams and carried an estimated market value of approximately Rs 7 lakh. Mandal explained that due to the massive crowd and the resulting turbulence, he did not feel the theft happening in real-time. As soon as he discovered the loss, he informed fellow leaders and police personnel present at the venue before formally registering a complaint at the Turki police station.
Authorities are currently scanning CCTV footage from cameras installed near the venue in an effort to identify suspicious individuals who were moving through the crowd during the commotion.
