Few Bollywood relationships have stayed in public memory quite as vividly as the one between Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai. Their romance took root during the making of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's beloved film 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam', and for a time the two were among the film industry's most talked-about couples. But when the relationship came apart, the pain Aishwarya experienced went well beyond the ordinary grief of a breakup. She had to watch an entire industry close ranks against her and stand firmly behind Salman.
A Former Co-Star Speaks Up
Adnan Prahlad Kakkar, who worked with Aishwarya Rai, spoke candidly about the ex-couple's split in a conversation with Vicky Lalwani. During the breakup period, Aishwarya trusted almost no one. She lived in genuine fear that nobody in the film world would step forward and stand by her side.
Bollywood Rallied Behind Salman
Adnan described how he tried to keep Aishwarya's spirits up, telling her repeatedly not to worry. But she kept circling back to the same anguish: the industry had turned its back on her. In his own words:
"I was just being there for her. I told her, 'Don't worry about it.' But she would say, 'The industry...' What hurt her the most was that the entire industry sided with Salman and left her alone. She genuinely felt like she had been betrayed. As far as the breakup itself goes, the relationship ending was ultimately a relief for her."
The Betrayal Hurt More Than the Breakup
Adnan was clear that the end of the relationship was not what had broken Aishwarya. The real wound came from the completely one-sided way the industry had responded. He explained:
"She wasn't sad about the breakup. What hurt her was that everyone took Salman's side, not hers. The truth was with her. After that, she lost her faith in the industry because she felt she hadn't been treated fairly. If the fault had been hers and the other side had been right, or if both sides had been treated equally, that would have been different. But none of that happened. The whole thing was completely one-sided."
Living in the Same Building, Adnan Saw Everything
Salman Khan had an excessively obsessive and angry temperament, and for Aishwarya the end of that relationship was ultimately a relief. Adnan also clarified that Aishwarya herself never directly told him any of this. He came to know because he and Salman Khan lived in the same building. As he described it:
"I knew all this because we lived in the same building. He would often create scenes in the building foyer and bang his head against the wall. The relationship had actually ended long before it was officially over. In the end, it was a relief for everyone: Aishwarya, her parents, and everyone close to her."
What Adnan's account ultimately reveals is that Aishwarya Rai's pain during that period had less to do with the breakup itself and far more to do with the sense of being abandoned by an entire industry at the moment she needed support most. The relationship had already wound down long before its official end, and when it finally did conclude, it was a relief for Aishwarya, her parents, and all those who cared for her.
