When Bollywood star Shahid Kapoor married Mira Rajput in 2015, the union brought together two entirely different worlds. Today, the couple are parents to two children, but at the time of their wedding, Rajput had virtually no connection to the film industry. The couple, joined by Kapoor's brother Ishaan Khatter, recently appeared on a popular comedy talk show where they opened up about their personal lives and reminisced about their unconventional beginnings.
The Green-Haired Suitor at the Doorstep
Reflecting on their initial meeting, Kapoor admitted that he approached the alliance with significant hesitation. Rajput was 14 years younger than him, and Kapoor was unsure whether someone in her twenties would share his wavelength. At the time of this matchmaking meeting, Kapoor was 34 years old, while Rajput was just 20. Adding to the nervousness was Kapoor's unconventional appearance during his visit to her family home in New Delhi.
Kapoor arrived with bright green hair, a bold styling choice required for his upcoming role in the film Udta Punjab. When Rajput's father opened the main door, he was visibly taken aback by the appearance of the prospective groom. Recalling that unforgettable encounter, Kapoor said,
"When my father-in-law opened the door, he paused for a moment looking at me."
According to Kapoor, the expression on his future father-in-law's face made it clear that he was silently questioning whom he was considering for his daughter. Kapoor spoke warmly of his in-laws, describing them as grounded, polite, and well-educated people, noting that Rajput's father is an engineer by profession.
A Seven-Hour Conversation and Strange Footwear
Despite their vast age difference and contrasting backgrounds, the initial interaction turned out to be remarkably engaging. Once the two sat down to speak, they ended up conversing for nearly 7 hours, completely losing track of time. Rajput chimed in with her own amusing memory from that day, sharing that Kapoor arrived wearing peculiar shoes and unexpectedly requested a photograph of his footwear. She remembered finding it utterly bizarre that anyone would focus on taking photos of shoes during a formal first meeting.
Anti-Flash Footwear and Culture Shock
Defending his actions with a laugh, Kapoor clarified the practical reason behind his choice of shoes. During that period, paparazzi culture was just starting to expand across India, and his footwear was equipped with specialized material that absorbed camera flash. The shoes effectively ruined paparazzi shots by reflecting light in a way that left only the footwear visible, shielding his face from aggressive lenses. Kapoor subsequently realized that Rajput, coming from an ordinary non-celebrity background, was entirely unacquainted with such industry tricks.
The cultural shock of joining the entertainment industry did not end with that first encounter. Kapoor recounted that after their marriage, Rajput watched an early edit of Udta Punjab and felt another wave of bewilderment. Seeing her husband portray a chaotic rockstar on screen left her briefly questioning who she had actually married, marking a striking introduction to life inside the film world.
