Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi starrer Munna Bhai MBBS is widely regarded as one of Bollywood's ultimate cult classics. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film set new benchmarks for comedy and emotion. However, the initial response to the movie was far from positive. Before it even hit the theatres, industry experts had predicted it to be a massive failure. According to TrendKia, director Rajkumar Hirani opened up about the initial rejection and the dramatic turnaround the film witnessed on its release day.
The Brutal Trial Show Feedback Labeling the Film a Disaster
In a conversation with Sanjay Arora, Rajkumar Hirani recalled how a well-known filmmaker from the industry declared the film a total disaster right after its first preview trial. This feedback left the debutant director deeply anxious. The prominent director strongly questioned Hirani's decision to cast an established action hero like Sanjay Dutt in a hospital environment, dressed in standard hospital uniforms instead of flashy, colorful outfits.
The critic also pointed out that Hirani should have at least filmed one song in an exotic international destination to make the movie visually appealing. According to him, dressing the entire cast in hospital scrubs was a major creative blunder. This negative analysis created heavy tension for the makers just before the theatrical release.
The Gatekeeper's Misunderstood Gesture at Gaiety Galaxy
On the morning of the release, the film opened to a sluggish box office response. To witness the audience's live reaction, Rajkumar Hirani visited the iconic Gaiety Galaxy theatre in Mumbai. Upon his arrival, the theatre gatekeeper showed him a thumbs-down sign. This sudden gesture broke Hirani's heart, leading him to believe that his directorial debut had completely crashed at the box office.
However, when the filmmaker stepped inside the auditorium, he realized the reality was quite different. The hall was about fifty percent full. From the perspective of a ticket seller, a show that was not completely packed was considered a failure, which is why the gatekeeper made that gesture. Inside the hall, the audience was laughing out loud and thoroughly enjoying every scene of the movie.
The Evening Turnaround and the Creation of a Cult Classic
While the morning shows had a quiet response, the narrative took a complete turn by the evening. Word-of-mouth spread rapidly, and theatres across the country started putting up housefull boards. The film did not just recover, it went on to become a massive hit at the box office and achieved legendary status over the years.
This film marked the spectacular directorial debut of Rajkumar Hirani. It holds a very emotional place in Indian cinema as it was the final film of veteran actor Sunil Dutt, who played the on-screen father to his real-life son, Sanjay Dutt. Supported by a stellar cast including Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani, and Gracy Singh, the movie won critical acclaim and cemented its legacy as a masterpiece.
