Overcoming the most difficult hurdles in life through unwavering determination, Faridabad-based para-athlete Pranav Surma has achieved remarkable milestones in the sporting world. A devastating accident at the tender age of sixteen inflicted severe trauma on his spinal cord, leaving doctors to inform him and his family that walking again would be nearly impossible and that he would likely remain in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Despite facing such bleak and discouraging circumstances at a young age, he refused to give up and persevered through every hardship that came his way.
From Accident Recovery to the Athletic Arena
The period following the accident proved to be an immense test for Pranav and his entire family, as uncertainty loomed large over his future path. After gradually processing the setback, he resumed his education, secured a job, and eventually ventured into the world of sports. In 2018, he took his initial steps into para-athletics, participating in state and national level competitions before the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily disrupted his training journey. Regaining momentum in 2022 under the guidance of coach Naval, he refined his focus and set his athletic pursuits on a concrete trajectory that would soon yield international recognition.
Record-Breaking Feats and Continental Dominance
The culmination of rigorous training and relentless discipline arrived in 2023, when Pranav participated in his first Asian Para Games and secured a gold medal in the club throw event. Following that breakthrough, he represented India at the Paris Paralympics in 2024, claiming a silver medal in the club throw. Continuing his stellar form, he made history at the Asian Para Games by capturing two gold medals. He set a new games record with a throw of 32.87 meters in the club throw F-51 event and established a fresh Asian record with a performance of 11.66 meters in the discus throw.
Mental Fortitude and Positive Visualization
Competing at major international tournaments brings a wave of mixed emotions, ranging from excitement to anxiety about potential outcomes. Pranav emphasizes that achieving success on a global stage requires immense emotional and mental resilience alongside physical conditioning. He routinely practiced positive visualization ahead of his events, consciously steering clear of self-doubt and negative thoughts. With these consecutive gold medals now secured, his sights are firmly set on preparing for the upcoming World Championships and the next Paralympic cycle.
Family Support and Navigating Personal Loss
Throughout this demanding journey, his father Sanjeev Sharma has been an unwavering pillar of strength, accompanying him during training sessions and meticulously managing his nutritional needs. Pranav prefers home-cooked meals and strictly avoids outside food to maintain peak physical condition. Just before departing for the recent competition, the family suffered a profound personal tragedy with the passing of Pranav's grandfather, with whom he shared an exceptionally close bond. Despite the heavy emotional toll, Pranav chose to step onto the competitive field and honor the commitment to his country.
Encouragement from National Leadership
Pranav's exceptional achievements have previously earned him the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on two separate occasions. He acknowledges that government backing and encouragement play a vital role in empowering athletes to excel internationally. His journey from a wheelchair-bound teenager facing a bleak prognosis to a record-setting international medalist stands as a powerful testament to hard work, unwavering family support, and a persistently positive outlook on life.
