Bollywood actor Imran Khan approached the Bombay High Court on Saturday, October 17, filing a petition against the directive issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer that orders him to exit India by October 28. In his legal filing, he has termed the administrative directive as arbitrary, completely devoid of solid grounds, and punitive in nature. The petition urges the judiciary to intervene immediately and stay the implementation of the order, with a hearing anticipated as early as next Monday.
Two Week Deadline And Show Cause Notice
The original directive granted Aamir Khan's nephew a two-week window to depart the country. Actor Imran Khan maintains that he has been residing in India since he was merely two years old. He submitted his petition electronically on Saturday. On the very same day, authorities operating under the Bureau of Immigration dispatched a fresh show cause notice, demanding an explanation as to why legal action should not be initiated against him under statutory provisions governing foreigners and Overseas Citizens of India.
Allegations Of Fundamental Rights Violations
Challenging the initial directive dated October 14, the petition contends that the administrative step was executed under external pressure with the underlying intent of suppressing dissent. It highlights that fundamental protections guaranteed under Article 14 guaranteeing equality before the law and Article 21 protecting personal liberty extend to foreigners residing within the country. The legal challenge points out that authorities failed to provide any prior warning or an adequate opportunity for a hearing, which directly breaches core principles of natural justice.
Protest Participation And Legal Representation
The sequence of events escalated four days after the actor participated in a public demonstration in Mumbai opposing the intensive revision of electoral rolls. Subsequently, the exit notice was served invoking the Immigration and Foreigners Act 2025. The petition notes that while the order vaguely alleges breaches of regulations, it omits any specific legal provisions violated, and emphasizes that the actor holds a clean record with no prior criminal history. The legal challenge is being spearheaded by MZM Legal along with advocates Zulfi Memon, Parvez Memon, and Chirag Naik.
