Karisma Kapoor recently shared insightful memories regarding the early days of her sister Kareena Kapoor Khan in the film industry, highlighting the moment she recognized Kareena's immense screen potential. Looking back at the filming of Kareena's debut venture, Karisma revealed that she had an immediate realization about her sister's future stardom during her very first close-up camera sequence.
Breaking Long-Standing Family Traditions
For several generations, the Kapoor family maintained a strict unwritten rule regarding female family members participating in the film industry. Actresses like Babita and Neetu Singh completely withdrew from their screen careers after marrying into the Kapoor lineage. However, Karisma Kapoor took a decisive step by becoming the first female member of the family to enter mainstream Hindi cinema in the early 1990s. Karisma established a highly successful career, headlining numerous box-office hits alongside prominent actors like Govinda and Salman Khan.
The Cinematic Moment on the Refugee Set
Following in her sister's footsteps, Kareena Kapoor prepared for her debut in the year 2000 with the movie Refugee. Karisma recounted visiting the film set during Kareena's initial shoot. The scene called for Kareena to lift her burqa in a close-up camera frame. Watching that specific shot, Karisma was struck by Kareena's extraordinary eye expressions and natural screen presence. Karisma noted that Kareena possessed a rare ability to convey deep emotion through her eyes, which instantly convinced her that Kareena was destined to become a superstar.
The Connection with Director JP Dutta
The creation of Refugee also carried a personal connection for the Kapoor family. Renowned filmmaker JP Dutta, who directed the project, had started his cinematic journey years earlier as an assistant to Randhir Kapoor, the sisters' father. This long-standing professional bond culminated in JP Dutta guiding Kareena through her initial step into professional acting, launching her career under his directorship.
Contrasting Personalities and Sisterly Support
Reflecting on their upbringing, Karisma pointed out how different their temperaments were as children. She described herself as simple, quiet, and reserved, whereas Kareena was spirited, energetic, and bold. Karisma mentioned that older children often tend to be more placid, while younger siblings display a fiery personality. Karisma recalled frequently stepping in to protect her younger sister from their mother's strict disciplinary moments. Despite these differences in nature, both granddaughters of legendary actor Raj Kapoor and daughters of Randhir Kapoor and Babita went on to become top leading ladies in Indian cinema.
