Veteran Hindi cinema actor Mushtaq Khan, widely recognized for his versatile performances in major releases such as Welcome, Gadar, Stree 2, and Aashiqui, passed away on Thursday following a battle with cancer. While the entire Indian film fraternity mourned the loss of the celebrated character artist, his passing has also brought back memories of a horrifying real-life ordeal from November 2024. During that shocking incident, the actor was lured from Mumbai under the guise of receiving a career felicitation, only to be held captive at gunpoint for nearly twelve hours by an armed gang.
A Fraudulent Award Function Invitation Became a Trap
In the entertainment industry, character artists and seasoned performers are frequently contacted to make guest appearances at regional festivals, award nights, and private inaugurations. Exploiting this routine practice, an individual calling himself Rahul Saini reached out to Mushtaq Khan over the phone, claiming they had met previously. Saini pitched an upcoming event in Meerut, describing it as a grand platform organized specifically to celebrate senior artists and achievers across creative fields.
Following discussions regarding his participation as a chief guest, Khan agreed on an appearance fee of 75 thousand rupees. To establish legitimacy and eliminate any doubt, the organizers promptly deposited an advance sum of 25 thousand rupees into his personal bank account. They also sent confirmed flight tickets covering his travel from Mumbai to Delhi along with a scheduled return journey the very next day. With verifiable travel itineraries and advance payment received, Khan had no reason to suspect foul play.
Abducted Shortly After Landing at Delhi Airport
In November 2024, Mushtaq Khan landed at Delhi airport as scheduled. A vehicle arranged by the organizers was waiting right outside the terminal to pick him up. The ride initially appeared normal, but after travelling some distance, the driver deliberately took an unexpected detour, directing the vehicle towards Meerut rather than the intended venue.
Armed assailants soon boarded the vehicle and seized total control of the actor. The captors immediately covered Khan's face with cloth to disorient him and obscure the route. He was subsequently led into a secluded room occupied by several armed individuals. It was at this moment that Khan realized he had fallen victim to a premeditated, coordinated hostage plot, as the criminals wasted no time in presenting their financial demands.
The Staggering Ransom Demand and Flawed Box-Office Logic
The captors demanded an exorbitant ransom of approximately 1 crore rupees for his release. When Mushtaq Khan expressed his inability to produce such a massive fortune, explaining that he worked strictly on fixed supporting roles, the gang flatly refused to believe him. The criminals reasoned that an actor who had shared screen space with Indian cinema's biggest superstars, including Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Ajay Devgn, must naturally possess immense personal wealth.
The kidnappers specifically cited the box-office success of Gadar 2, insisting that because the feature film had earned hundreds of crores of rupees in theaters, every actor appearing in it must have pocketed crores as well. Khan patiently tried to explain the realities of filmmaking, pointing out that total box-office revenues do not go to the cast and that supporting actors receive contracted professional fees. Unmoved by logic, the armed men remained deeply suspicious, highlighting how screen glamour can lead criminals to wildly overestimate an artist's personal finances.
Twelve Hours of Torment and Extortion
Held hostage for roughly 12 hours, Mushtaq Khan endured severe physical assaults and intense mental harassment as the kidnappers tried every tactic to squeeze money out of him and his relatives. Under intense coercion, the gang managed to force digital money transfers, extracting more than 2 lakh rupees in total from the bank accounts belonging to the actor and his son.
Throughout that agonizing night, Khan remained focused on finding a single opportunity to escape alive. He later reflected on how the frightening scenario resembled a tense action sequence from a cinematic script, with the grim difference that this was real life and he was entirely unarmed and unprotected.
Dawn Call to Prayer Provided the Escape Route
The decisive breakthrough arrived around a quarter to six in the morning when the resonance of the Islamic call to prayer drifted into the room. Hearing the azan, Mushtaq Khan instantly deduced that a mosque and an inhabited settlement were situated close by, which restored his hope of finding help.
Seeing that his armed guards had drifted off to sleep after hours of exertion, Khan seized the window of opportunity. He managed to slip out quietly, broke free from the premises, and made a dash in the direction of the azan. Reaching the local mosque, he sought immediate protection from the worshippers present inside. With the swift assistance of local residents, he contacted his family and, through subsequent police intervention, was safely reunited with his loved ones.
