While cricket followers worldwide revere Sachin Tendulkar as the only cricketer to be honored with the Bharat Ratna, very few are familiar with an extraordinary incident from his teenage years where he actually took the field for Pakistan. Before stepping onto the international stage for India in 1989, the young batting prodigy had already made an uncredited appearance on the ground alongside the visiting Pakistani squad two full years earlier.
The Brabourne Stadium Exhibition Match
The unusual episode unfolded on January 20, 1987, during an exhibition contest between India and Pakistan hosted at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Tendulkar was merely 13 years old at the time and had not yet earned his official international call-up for India. During the scheduled lunch interval of the game, Pakistan experienced an unexpected squad shortage when two of their seasoned players, Javed Miandad and Abdul Qadir, departed the field to take a rest.
Imran Khan Deploys The Young Fielder
With two vacant spots on the ground, Pakistan urgently required substitute fielders to resume play. In that fleeting window, the opportunity was handed to young Sachin Tendulkar. Pakistani captain Imran Khan sent Tendulkar out onto the turf, stationing him on the outfield boundary at wide long-on. Wearing the substitute role with seriousness, the schoolboy cricketer positioned himself ready to stop runs for the touring side.
Chasing Kapil Dev's Aerial Shot
Shortly after Tendulkar took up his fielding position, Indian stalwart Kapil Dev struck an aerial stroke high into the Mumbai sky. Tendulkar sprinted roughly 15 meters across the outfield trying to reach the descending ball, but he could not arrive in time to complete the catch. Reflecting on that missed chance years later in his autobiography, Tendulkar remarked that had he been placed at mid-on instead of long-on, he most likely would have managed to hold onto the catch.

Spectators at the Brabourne Stadium that afternoon had no inkling that the diminutive boy fielding for the visitors would grow into the sport's greatest icon. Tendulkar later noted in his memoirs that he wondered whether Imran Khan even remembered that he had once fielded for Pakistan. In an ironic twist of fate, less than two years after chasing cricket balls for Pakistan in Mumbai, Tendulkar walked out wearing the Indian jersey to make his official international debut against Pakistan in Karachi.
