Legal troubles have deepened for film director Anurag Kashyap following alleged objectionable remarks made on social media concerning the Brahmin community. A trial court located in Surat, Gujarat, has issued a warrant against him after he repeatedly failed to appear before the court. Judicial proceedings had previously seen the issuance of summonses followed by public notices, yet Kashyap did not present himself in court.
Background of the Controversy and Social Media Exchange
The entire dispute originated during an online debate surrounding caste-related arguments linked to the film Phule. While responding to an online user during this exchange, Kashyap reportedly lost his composure and made disparaging comments regarding the Brahmin community. Once the statement circulated widely, strong anger erupted across the country. Demonstrations took place in various cities, and members of the community demanded strict legal action against the filmmaker.
Clarification, Apology and the Criminal Complaint in Surat
Following intense backlash, Kashyap initially stated that his words had been taken out of context. With criticism mounting from all sides, he subsequently posted an apology on social media for his inappropriate choice of language. Despite the apology, a criminal complaint was filed against him in Surat, alleging that his statements had hurt religious and social sentiments. Community members had initially sought an apology, but unresolved grievances led directly to court action in Gujarat.
Court Summons, Defiance, and Issuance of the Warrant
The trial court in Surat formally took cognisance of the matter and issued summonses directing Anurag Kashyap to attend hearings. When he did not respond, the court proceeded to issue public notices requiring his presence. Because he continued to skip appearances and disregard the court directives, the magistrate issued a warrant against him. The court has scheduled the next hearing in this high-profile matter for December 24.
