How the Vocals Were Recorded Separately
Shankar Mahadevan explained that the trio of singers recorded their parts individually rather than singing together in the same booth. Each artist performed the entire song separately, and during the post-production stage, their respective vocal segments were carefully edited and merged together. In a video discussing the making of the music, Mahadevan was seen sitting alongside his composer partners Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa, accompanied by singer Shaan.
Seamless Blend Created in Post-Production
During the conversation, when the host asked if everyone was recording together in the same booth during the sessions, Shaan recalled that while they were present in the room, they recorded their parts individually, noting that KK was also there. He added that anyone listening to the track would never realize it was recorded separately, as the final output creates a seamless illusion that all three artists are singing together in perfect harmony.
Selecting the Best Portions for a Natural Sound
Elaborating on the recording process, Shankar Mahadevan stated that each artist sang the full track, and later the best portions of their voices were selected according to the requirements of the arrangement. Noorani recalled having dinner at a club in Mumbai where people were dancing in a separate section. The moment the DJ played Koi Kahe, almost everyone rushed to the dance floor, packing it so densely that it became nearly impossible to walk through. Once the track finished, the club DJ approached him jokingly and blamed him, pointing out that it was the first time a Hindi song had created such a massive sensation in a Western-oriented club setting.
Shifting the Perception of Hindi Music in Clubs
Recalling that era, Noorani noted that another music company had initially predicted the album would only sell in Malabar Hills. At the time, many people held the mindset that playing Hindi tracks in clubs was not considered cool. The Dil Chahta Hai soundtrack proved to be one of the pioneering albums that shattered this perception. The film's music became immensely popular among young audiences, cementing Koi Kahe as a staple of party and club culture.
