A global dialogue on harmonising historical philosophical traditions with contemporary hurdles convened in Varanasi. Speaking on Monday at the inaugural session of the world conference themed 'Ancient Wisdom for Modern Challenges', Adani Foundation Chairperson Dr Priti Adani noted that legacy thinking must meaningfully connect with today's difficulties to uplift everyday human existence.
Relevance of Civilisational Learning in Contemporary Times
Reflecting on the role of historical insight, Dr Priti Adani observed that intellectual heritage does not gain significance merely by virtue of its age. Instead, its authentic worth emerges when humanity grasps its direct application to contemporary dilemmas. She advocated preserving rich civilisational insight and employing it proactively to mitigate human suffering, structural inequalities, and recurring disputes across the globe. Emphasising constructive direction, she remarked, "ज्ञान हमें दुनिया बदलने की शक्ति देता है और विवेक हमें ये सुनिश्चित करने में मदद करता है कि हम इसे बेहतर दिशा में बदलें।"
Connecting Global Philosophies with Shared Values
During her address, Dr Adani drew insights from notable thinkers across ancient civilisations. She highlighted the Greek philosopher Aristotle regarding human development, referenced the teachings of Lord Buddha aimed at alleviating sorrow, and examined the foundational tenets of Chinese philosopher Confucius focused on ethical conduct, personal accountability, and community harmony. Linking these varied traditions with India's ethos of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam', she urged stakeholders to harness this collective philosophical wealth to advance sustainable development and enrich public welfare.
Three Decades of Grassroots Community Initiatives
Sharing perspectives from thirty years of grassroots engagement, Dr Adani underscored that authentic advancement must be evaluated through its measurable effect on individual lives. She framed genuine public service as actively hearing community priorities and equipping people to shape their own livelihoods. Established in 1996, the Adani Foundation operates across 7000 villages spread over 22 states, positively touching the lives of 1.3 crore individuals through extensive social welfare programmes.
Academic Collaborations and Global Trajectory
The conference also touched upon the 'Bharat Knowledge Graph' initiative, supported by a $10 million commitment from the Adani Group. This undertaking seeks to democratise access to India's vast intellectual legacy for multi-disciplinary researchers, currently extending backing to 14 doctoral scholars.
Earlier, the inaugural proceedings commenced with an address by Dr Nirupam Bajpai, Senior Research Scholar at the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University. Dr Bajpai conveyed warm wishes on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and detailed Varanasi's enduring heritage as a vibrant crossroads of spiritual traditions and intellectual dialogue. This Varanasi symposium represents an ongoing international series conceived originally in Greece. Preceding editions took place in Athens in 2022 and Stagira in 2023, followed by conventions in the Chinese cities of Qufu and Beijing during 2024.
