Public sector lender Bank of Baroda revealed on Monday that unauthorized access to specific data occurred after an employee email account was compromised. Despite this security incident, the financial institution firmly maintained that its primary banking framework remains entirely safe and untouched by the breach.
Immediate Corrective Measures Taken
The bank addressed the development through its social media channel, stating that the situation stemmed from a security lapse on an internal email account which allowed unauthorized entry into certain files. Management detected the anomaly in a timely manner and rolled out immediate measures to contain the situation. However, the institution did not specify the exact date when the email compromise occurred or the designation of the staff member involved.
Claims of Massive Data Leak on the Dark Web
This disclosure follows widespread media reports suggesting that hackers breached the lender's network and leaked upwards of 1 TB of customer data onto the dark web. According to those unverified claims, the exposed files allegedly contained sensitive personal details belonging to various account holders.
Robust Security Infrastructure and Forensic Audit
The company emphasized that it operates a robust security architecture and has already initiated a comprehensive forensic audit into the matter. Furthermore, the bank is actively collaborating with relevant regulatory authorities and agencies to investigate the root cause. Reaffirming its commitment, the lender stated that it upholds the highest standards of information security to safeguard the trust of its customers and stakeholders. The official update was shared via X by Bank of Baroda.
