A year-long geological surveying mission across China has identified major underground reserves of critical minerals, uncovering significant deposits of gold alongside strategic metals vital for advanced defense, aerospace, and energy infrastructure. The discoveries include rhenium, an ultra-rare metal used in high-performance jet engines, and zircon, an indispensable material for nuclear power facilities, giving the country a substantial boost in mineral security.
Nationwide Exploration Mobilized 2,000 Surveyors and Experts
The extensive exploration effort was carried out across 27 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities to assess resources across 17 of the most essential mineral categories. Over 100 scientific institutes and universities contributed to the program, deploying approximately 2,000 geologists and field surveyors. Teams conducted in-depth investigations across more than 1,800 active operational mines as well as dozens of large and medium-scale mining zones to accurately determine untapped subterranean wealth.
Rhenium Reserves Surge by More Than 200 Percent
Data from China's Ministry of Natural Resources shows that the single most dramatic expansion occurred in rhenium deposits, with total identified reserves surging by more than 200 percent as a result of the latest findings. Rhenium ranks among the planet's rarest and costliest metals, serving as an irreplaceable ingredient in heat-resistant superalloys required for modern fighter jet engines and space rockets. The domestic discovery provides critical raw material backing for domestic aerospace engineering and defense manufacturing capabilities.
Substantial Additions to Gold and Nickel Resources
The comprehensive review also documented major additions to domestic precious and industrial metal bases. Newly verified gold deposits were evaluated as equivalent to 50 large-scale mineral reserves. Simultaneously, newly identified nickel deposits correspond to the scale of 30 large-scale mineral reserves. Because nickel serves as an indispensable core component for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, portable consumer electronics, and defense equipment, these resource additions reinforce the domestic manufacturing supply chain against external raw material constraints.
Nuclear-Grade Zircon and Vital Semiconductor Elements
In Baicheng, located in Xinjiang, surveyors pinpointed a major deposit of zircon. Zirconium extracted from zircon is primarily utilized to fabricate protective fuel rod cladding inside nuclear reactors, a material category for which the country has historically relied heavily on foreign imports. The project also reviewed and reassessed critical chipmaking elements including gallium, indium, tantalum, and vanadium. Although some of these sites were previously categorized as low-grade ore and bypassed, advanced testing confirmed their commercial viability and strategic importance for advanced electronics manufacturing.
