The government in Delhi has taken a major step regarding ration cards to streamline the public distribution system. Following an extensive investigation by the food and supply department, more than 1.79 lakh ration cards found to be in violation of regulations have been completely cancelled. As a result of this crackdown, the names of approximately 7.45 lakh people have been removed from the Public Distribution System list. The government states that this measure aims to ensure that subsidized government rations reach only genuinely needy families.
Various Irregularities Uncovered During the Investigation
During the course of this comprehensive verification drive, several types of discrepancies came to light. Officials identified families whose annual income exceeded the prescribed ceiling, while other individuals had not collected rations for extended periods. Furthermore, action was taken against ration cards operating in the names of deceased individuals and cases involving individuals benefiting from multiple cards. The department continues to conduct verification campaigns to make the ration system much more transparent.
Highest Number of Cancellations Among Households Exceeding Income Limits
The investigation found the highest number of cancellations among ration cards where the annual household income surpassed the government-set threshold. Nearly 1.44 lakh such ration cards have been cancelled. More than 6.47 lakh people linked to these cards have been excluded from the ration scheme. According to officials, households with a financial status better than established standards are not considered eligible for subsidized rations. Therefore, this action was executed in accordance with rules following verification of income details.
Crackdown on Individuals Not Claiming Rations for 12 Months
The government also removed ration card holders from the list who had not collected government rations for a prolonged duration. The investigation identified roughly 35,000 ration cards on which no ration had been drawn consecutively for 12 months. Approximately 97,000 beneficiaries associated with these cards will also no longer remain part of the public distribution system. The department believes that such cards prevent the benefits of the scheme from reaching those who truly need them.
Action Taken Against Duplicate Cards and Deceased Beneficiaries
During the verification process, certain ration cards were also discovered operating under the names of deceased persons. In such instances, approximately 4,987 beneficiaries were removed from the list. Concurrently, action was taken against about 29,000 people who took advantage of duplicate ration cards. The issuance of multiple cards in the name of a single person or family led to the misuse of the government scheme. The department invalidated these cards following thorough verification.
Ongoing Verification Drive and Emphasis on Transparency
The food and supply department has indicated that the inspection of ration cards will continue moving forward. The government's objective is to ensure that only eligible and needy families receive the benefits of government rations. The department is appealing to citizens to keep their ration card information updated periodically and to refrain from obtaining benefits through incorrect information. According to officials, such actions will increase transparency in the system and ensure government assistance reaches genuine beneficiaries.
