Mushroom farming has emerged as a profitable livelihood option for many people in Jamui. While large numbers of people are cultivating mushrooms and earning well, many often complain that despite heavy investments, the crop fails to grow properly and yields no profit. Pappu Tanti, who has been cultivating mushrooms in the Jamui district for several years, explains that preparing the compost correctly can significantly boost both production and income. He also notes that selecting the right type of mushroom to grow is a crucial step that requires careful consideration.
How To Prepare Compost For Higher Yields
Instead of directly using raw straw or husk, growers should prepare a proper compost mix. To make this compost, one should start with wheat straw and mix it with bran, oilcake, urea, DAP, and potash. Adding poultry manure to this mixture works wonders. Once the mixture is properly prepared, it is left for a short period before seeds are added, packed into bags, and placed inside a dark room. Each bag should weigh around 9 to 10 kilograms, containing 100 grams of seeds.
Managing Moisture And Environmental Conditions
The entire mushroom production cycle takes about 45 days. Throughout this period, growers must ensure consistent moisture levels in the bags. Excessive watering can ruin the crop, while dry conditions will prevent the mushrooms from growing properly. Regarding variety selection, button mushrooms currently offer the highest yield. Additionally, the cultivation room should ideally remain mostly dark and maintain a cool temperature, which greatly facilitates mushroom growth. Coconut husk can also be used as an alternative material to prepare compost and improve production.
Key Precautions For New Growers
Several other factors require careful attention during mushroom cultivation. Beginners are advised to start cultivation with a very low investment so that any initial losses can be easily absorbed. Once the production stabilizes and profits begin to flow, the operation can be scaled up to a larger level. Anyone looking to earn a decent income from mushroom farming can achieve success by keeping these practical guidelines in mind.
