Commuting across key commercial and residential pockets in the National Capital Region is set for a major upgrade with plans underway to extend the metro network from Ballabhgarh to Palwal. The proposed elevated transit line will cover an estimated distance of 28 kilometres entirely above ground level. Initial blueprints outline the development of approximately 10 new stations along this path, creating a direct public transit link between the Faridabad industrial belt and Palwal. While this initiative is anticipated to ease regional vehicular congestion and improve daily travel times significantly, execution of the project is contingent on securing subsequent statutory approvals and central clearances.
Project Budget and Station Layout Along the Corridor
According to the project blueprint, the transit corridor will commence from Ballabhgarh and extend southwards to reach Palwal. Planners have proposed locating the final operational passenger stop near the Palwal Mini Secretariat complex, with the track terminal point concluding near the Palwal Police Lines. The construction and civil infrastructure expenditure for this initiative has been estimated at approximately 4,500 crore rupees. Responsibility for constructing and supervising the infrastructure is designated for the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC). An initial technical assessment carried out in 2023 had evaluated a 25-kilometre alignment with 10 stations, which was subsequently updated and expanded to the current 28-kilometre route plan.
Feasibility Clearance and Submission to the Central Ministry
The operational framework of the Ballabhgarh-Palwal transit plan was assessed in detail during a high-level review meeting chaired by Haryana Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi. In the meeting, HMRTC Managing Director Ajay Kumar stated that Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has sanctioned the final feasibility report of the project. Following the state's clearance, the technical document has been formally submitted to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for review. Obtaining approval for a feasibility study and securing the final financial and construction sanction are distinct procedural stages. As a consequence, specific construction start schedules and projected commissioning deadlines have not yet been finalised.
Gurugram Route Outlines 28 Stations Connecting Sector-56 to Pachgaon
Infrastructure reviews at the meeting also covered another significant urban mobility project connecting Sector-56 in Gurugram to Pachgaon. This broader transit corridor is planned to span roughly 35.25 kilometres, featuring 28 fully elevated stations. The capital outlay for the Gurugram project stands at an estimated 10,410 crore rupees. Its detailed project report (DPR) is already complete, with administrative clearances currently in progress. Strategic integration at Pachgaon includes an interchange station designed to connect the metro line with the proposed Namo Bharat train operating between Sarai Kale Khan and Bawal, enabling unified multi-modal transit across the region.
