Kerala's flagship festival season witnessed a massive surge in alcohol consumption, with official figures revealing state-wide liquor revenues climbing to Rs 771.29 crore during the primary eight-day Onam celebration window. The sales figures released by Excise Department officials mark a notable 10.94 percent growth compared to the Rs 694.96 crore generated during the matching festive timeline in the previous year. Driven by widespread festivities across the state, retail outlets managed by the Kerala State Beverages Corporation, widely known as BEVCO, experienced heavy footfall throughout the holiday span.
Early Festive Momentum and Daily Sales Breakdown
The upward trajectory in liquor transactions was clearly visible right from the opening days of the Onam celebration period. According to official data covering the period between August 18 and August 20, BEVCO outlets registered alcohol sales totaling Rs 232.99 crore. This marked a solid jump from the Rs 209.89 crore recorded during the exact same three-day window in the previous year, reflecting a net increase of Rs 23.1 crore in consumer spending.
Single-day sales reached their highest intensity on Uthradam, which is observed as the crucial day immediately preceding Thiruvonam. On Uthradam alone, liquor worth Rs 126.31 crore passed through government-run retail counters across Kerala. However, despite being one of the busiest shopping days of the entire season, this single-day total was slightly lower than the Rs 137.64 crore recorded on the corresponding Uthradam day during the prior year's festive period.
State Treasury Dependence and Annual Revenue Growth
The massive surge during the initial eight days contributed to a broader pattern of high fiscal performance for the beverage sector. Official sales statistics show that BEVCO achieved a total turnover of Rs 21,130.78 crore during the 2025-26 financial year. From this substantial revenue collection, the corporation contributed Rs 18,675.71 crore directly to the state exchequer.
This represents a significant expansion in government earnings compared to the 2024-25 fiscal period, when state treasury contributions stood at Rs 17,221.15 crore. These figures emphasize how deeply Kerala relies on liquor-related taxation and state-controlled beverage distribution to maintain its public revenue stream and fulfill state financial obligations.
Financial Strain Behind Record Turnover
Paradoxically, despite orchestrating record-breaking turnover and directing thousands of crores into state coffers, BEVCO faced severe internal financial pressure. Reports indicate that the corporation registered a net loss of Rs 180 crore in the year 2025. The principal factor driving this financial deficit was a sharp escalation in the gallonage fee imposed on beverage sales.
The state government raised the gallonage fee from a nominal five paise to Rs 10 per gallon. This dramatic rate adjustment substantially increased the corporation's overall operational expenses, severely eroding its net profit margins despite unprecedented sales volume at retail outlets throughout Kerala.
Operation Toofan and Shift Toward Legal Alcohol
The sharp increase in holiday liquor transactions has prompted widespread discussion regarding law enforcement operations in Kerala, particularly Operation Toofan. Launched as a comprehensive anti-narcotics campaign, Operation Toofan aims to dismantle illicit drug networks and curb illegal substance distribution across the state.
Local analyses indicate that the high liquor figures may reflect a distinct substitution effect among consumers. As stringent enforcement under Operation Toofan restricts the availability of illegal drugs, individuals appear to be shifting away from illicit narcotics and turning toward legally accessible, state-regulated alcohol products available through official channels.
