A high-level administrative team conducted a field assessment in Ampati to review local rural enterprises and farmer-based cooperatives in South West Garo Hills. Deputy Commissioner Anendya Raajsshre, alongside key officials from the Agriculture Department and the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA), visited operational units producing biofertilizers and honey. The visit focused on inspecting facility operations, evaluating progress, and identifying structural bottlenecks to help connect local production directly with institutional markets.
Institutional Backing for Garo Hills' Sole Biofertilizer Unit
The delegation began its inspection at Larry Organic, where proprietor Biswambhor Paul Moirangthem briefed the visiting team on the unit's working framework. Operating as the only biofertilizer production setup in the entire Garo Hills region, the facility specializes in organic agricultural inputs. It manufactures eco-friendly biofertilizers and biopesticides specially formulated to treat the acidic soil conditions common across Northeast India.
While the enterprise provides steady employment to 6 local workers, it currently struggles with sales distribution and commercial marketing. The unit was recently empaneled with the Directorate of Agriculture and supplied specialized biofertilizer to MBMA for Lakadong Turmeric cultivation. Moirangthem emphasized that obtaining formal certification and licensing is vital to enhance product credibility and enable retail expansion into markets beyond Meghalaya. In response, Deputy Commissioner Raajsshre commended the green initiative and instructed both the Agriculture Department and MBMA to explore structured procurement channels and official market linkages, strictly adhering to quality guidelines and government norms.
Beekeeping Facilities and Weather Impact on Honey Production
Following the biofertilizer unit, the administrative team inspected the Mellim Beekeeping Society, an organization established in 2022. During interactions with office bearers and participating members, the society revealed that nearly 280 local farmers are currently engaged in honey production under its fold. The society's newly constructed infrastructure includes dedicated machinery alongside specialized processing and storage rooms.
Regarding production volumes, the society reported collecting approximately 2,500 litres of honey in 2025. However, adverse weather patterns reduced output to around 900 litres this year. Members explained that rainy conditions naturally slow down honey extraction because bee colonies require higher energy resources for internal reproduction and hive expansion. To maintain regional skill development, the society retains 2 Master Trainers who deliver technical guidance across South West Garo Hills and supply bee colonies to rearers in neighboring districts.
Strategic Convergence for Quality Control and Market Expansion
To overcome current production hurdles, the Deputy Commissioner urged the Mellim Beekeeping Society to leverage institutional support by integrating its programs with PRIME Meghalaya and the Horticulture Department. She highlighted that collaborative convergence would streamline farmer mobilization, enhance total yield, and create dependable trade connections. Furthermore, she advised establishing precise quality benchmarks for raw honey procurement. Setting firm standard parameters ensures batch consistency, boosts buyer trust, and commands higher market prices for local honey.
Official Inspection Team and Future Outlook
The visiting administrative delegation comprised Joint Director of Agriculture T. Sangma, MBMA District Project Manager G. Marak, DRF official M. Momin, and the MBMA Field Engineer. The comprehensive field inspection highlighted the vast potential of grass-root enterprises to foster sustainable farming, local entrepreneurship, and rural employment in South West Garo Hills. However, maximizing this economic potential will depend on sustained government backing, rigorous quality management, and robust supply chain integration.
