A surge of activity has swept across global financial markets following an unexpected policy adjustment by the US Treasury Department. By opting to expand its support for longer-term government debt, the Treasury has placed a damper on US Dollar strength, allowing gold prices, major foreign currencies, and leading digital assets to stabilize and post notable technical recoveries.
Gold Price Dynamics and TD Securities Forecast
In precious metals trading, spot gold (XAU/USD) trimmed its recent intraday gains heading into Thursday's American trading session. The moderate pullback occurred as US Treasury yields and the US Dollar began to steady following a sharp drop during the previous session.
Market analysis provided by TD Securities indicates that the underlying foundation for gold remains constructive over the near term. Analysts at TD Securities emphasized that signals showing the Treasury's commitment to supporting the longer end of the yield curve, combined with a Federal Reserve that appears willing to look past elevated energy prices, provide sufficient fundamental backing for the metal in the immediate future.
However, the firm noted that a sustained breakout to new highs will likely experience a delay. Financial markets continue to price in potential interest rate increases for 2027. Consequently, the next major upward rally for gold is unlikely to take shape until broader market participants become firmly convinced that the Federal Reserve will maintain a prolonged pause on rate changes.
US Treasury Liquidity Action and Yield Market Impact
The catalyst driving sentiment across asset classes stems directly from an unannounced scheduling shift by the US Treasury Department. On Wednesday at 12:32 GMT, the department announced a substantial expansion of its liquidity support buyback operations targeting long-term government securities.
Under the revised structure, the buyback operation limits in the 10-year to 20-year and 20-year to 30-year maturity sectors will double from their previous maximum of $2 billion per operation to at least $4 billion. This expanded liquidity window is scheduled to open on September 9 and will remain active through November 4. The surprise decision effectively tempered the recent sharp ascent in borrowing costs. Following Wednesday's steep yield decline, the 10-year US Treasury yield stabilized near 4.672% on Thursday.
Foreign Exchange Performance for GBP/USD and EUR/USD
The softer tone surrounding the US Dollar has allowed major currency pairs to defend recent gain thresholds. The GBP/USD currency pair held firm well above 1.3600 despite pulling back slightly from a six-month peak above 1.3650 reached earlier in the session. Continued weakness in the greenback provided strong support for the British Pound.
Meanwhile, EUR/USD lost some of its bullish momentum, moving into a flat range just under 1.1700 after touching a three-month high earlier in the day. Despite the pause in momentum, downside pressure on the euro remains well-contained due to the ongoing inability of the US Dollar to generate upside traction following the Treasury's market intervention.
Cryptocurrency Rally Led by Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ripple
Digital currencies experienced broad-based buying pressure on Thursday, taking positive cues from the wider market environment. Bitcoin (BTC) spearheaded the advance by breaking above the critical $70,000 threshold, signaling strong bullish interest.
Ethereum (ETH) echoed the positive sentiment, maintaining a solid stance above $2,200. Concurrently, Ripple (XRP) mounted a rebound that pushed its price back above $1.15, confirming that buyers have regained firm control across major crypto assets.
