Approximately 1,000 tonnes of onions harvested during the rabi season have been procured directly from Nashik. Stringent quality parameters were established for these onions, mandating that they must be of A-grade quality, highly marketable, free from decay, devoid of excessive sprouting, and measure 45 millimeters or more in size.

Taking proactive measures to check soaring prices at the grassroots level, Vellore District Collector P.S. Leela Alex personally oversaw the distribution of onions at Rs 35 per kg in fair-price shops across the district. P.S. Leela Alex is an IAS officer belonging to the 2020 batch of the Tamil Nadu cadre. Known widely as an efficient administrator, she serves as the new Collector of Vellore. Supply Transported via Trains and Roadways
The substantial stock of onions has been sourced through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India Limited (NCCF) following explicit directives from the central government. The consignment was successfully transported to Chennai utilizing both freight trains and roadways. Official sources have indicated that another dedicated rake carrying additional supplies is expected to arrive shortly. This swift intervention was necessitated by a sudden and sharp spike in market prices, prompting concerted logistical efforts to stabilize retail rates.
