WhatsApp has officially rolled out a brand-new bill payment service in India, designed to let everyday users manage routine utility and financial payments directly within the messaging application. Launched on September 3rd, this feature was developed to help consumers complete their regular bill payments without needing to switch back and forth between multiple applications.
Powered by Bharat Connect and Wide Biller Network
The service operates on the backbone of Bharat Connect, which was previously known as the Bharat Bill Payment System. This integration grants users access to an extensive network of 22,722 billers spanning across 30 distinct categories. Through this fresh capability, individuals can clear various household liabilities and financial obligations, including electricity bills, gas charges, water bills, FASTag top-ups, insurance premiums, credit card statements, and loan repayments.
Step-by-Step Payment Instructions
Navigating the newly introduced WhatsApp feature is straightforward, requiring users to follow a simple sequence of steps. First, open the WhatsApp application on your mobile device. Next, tap the rupee icon located at the top of the main WhatsApp home screen. If you have not linked your bank account yet, you must complete that initial setup process first. Once your account is successfully linked, choose the appropriate bill category from the available options. Proceed by selecting your specific biller, then input and confirm the necessary account details when prompted. WhatsApp will automatically retrieve the outstanding bill amount for you. Finally, review the displayed total and proceed to complete the transaction.
Payment Methods and Rollout Timeline
Transactions can be completed using UPI, debit cards, or credit cards. This bill payment facility is currently being rolled out slowly and gradually to both Android and iOS users across India. Consequently, many individuals may not see immediate availability of the feature on their devices, though the rollout is expected to expand to a broader audience over the coming weeks.
WhatsApp has steadily worked to expand its market presence across India through its dedicated payment platform. According to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India, WhatsApp Pay processed approximately 150 million transactions in June 2026, marking a significant rise from the roughly 37 million transactions recorded in June 2024. Furthermore, its overall share of the UPI transaction volume climbed to about 0.7% in June 2026, up from 0.27% two years prior.
