In Rishikesh, changing weather brings shifts not only to our wardrobes and daily routines but also alters the body's internal requirements. As the heat gives way to a mild chill and humidity in the atmosphere, paying close attention to diet becomes crucial. According to Ayurveda, transitional periods between seasons are considered a delicate phase for the human body. During this time, the digestive system can become somewhat sensitive, and poor dietary choices can lead to issues like gas, indigestion, a heavy stomach, or lethargy. Therefore, experts recommend including light, fresh, and easily digestible foods on your plate during this phase. Dr. Rajkumar (Ayush) shared with Local 18 that the first step during a seasonal shift is to keep meals relatively light and prefer freshly prepared, warm home-cooked food over heavy alternatives.
What to Eat and How to Protect Digestion
Light options such as moong dal, light vegetables, khichdi, dalia, and simple lentils are gentle on the stomach and easy to digest. If your regular diet consists of very heavy or spicy meals, reducing them slightly during the weather transition is advisable. Seasonal fruits available locally should also be incorporated into the daily diet, consumed in moderation according to individual appetite rather than all at once. Alongside fruits, including green vegetables like spinach, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, and pointed gourd helps maintain a balanced daily meal. Adequate hydration must not be neglected either. Many people reduce their water intake when the weather cools down, but the body still requires proper hydration. Instead of consuming very cold water, normal or lukewarm water is a better choice to keep the body well-hydrated throughout the day.
Foods and Habits to Avoid During the Transition
It is equally important to know which items should be minimized during this period. Fried and heavily oily foods top this list. Samosas, pakoras, deep-fried snacks, and fast food might taste appealing, but overindulgence can disrupt digestion. Excessively spicy and hot foods can also trigger discomfort for many individuals. Stale food should be strictly avoided; meals should be freshly cooked rather than consumed after sitting for long periods. Additionally, limiting excessive sweets, sugary beverages, and heavily processed foods is a wise decision. Giving the body a simple and balanced diet rather than heavy meals helps it adapt smoothly to the changing environment.
Precautions Regarding Cold Items and Meal Timings
Caution should also be exercised regarding cold items. Consuming very cold beverages, iced treats, or items straight out of the refrigerator can aggravate throat or digestive issues for certain people, though individual bodily responses may vary. Meal timing is another critical factor. Instead of consuming a very heavy meal late at night, dinner should ideally be kept light and eaten well before bedtime. Chewing food thoroughly and avoiding overeating are considered highly beneficial habits for maintaining a healthy digestive system during seasonal shifts.
