Sugarcane growers in Chhattisgarh have received a significant financial boost as the state government announced an increase of Rs 70 per quintal in the crop purchase price. Following this revision, the new support rate for sugarcane stands at Rs 425 per quintal, up from the earlier baseline of Rs 355 per quintal. The announcement led protesting agricultural unions to immediately suspend their ongoing demonstrations that had disrupted regional transit.
Agreement Reached Following Dialogue with Chief Minister
The decision was finalized after a delegation representing farmer associations held high-level discussions with Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai. Prior to these talks, large-scale farmer protests had caused severe vehicular congestion along the National Highway for three consecutive days. The suspension of the agitation has restored normal traffic flow and brought major relief to commuters and local residents who faced persistent travel disruptions.
Revised Rate Applicable to 2025-26 Crushing Season
Sharing details of the policy revision on social media platform X, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai stated that agricultural prosperity remains central to the state's progress. He confirmed that sugar mills will now procure sugarcane at the revised rate of Rs 425 per quintal. Furthermore, sugarcane procured during the 2025-26 crushing season will also be disbursed using these upgraded price slabs to improve farming returns.
Four Demands Accepted, Fresh Protest Planned for October 27
With this announcement, the administration has resolved 4 out of the 7 primary demands submitted by the farmers, leading to the immediate withdrawal of the road blockade. However, farm union representatives noted that their broader campaign remains active. To push for the resolution of their remaining grievances, the farmer groups have announced plans to stage a protest outside the Chief Minister's residence in the capital city of Raipur on October 27.
