A contentious social media post escalated into widespread late-night violence in the Khaparganj area under the City Kotwali police station in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, on Friday. What initially began as a verbal altercation between two groups quickly degenerated into a fierce confrontation involving hundreds of individuals. The situation spiraled out of control as both sides engaged in aggressive stone-pelting, creating severe panic across the neighborhood and forcing terrified local residents to take shelter inside their homes.
Escalation of Violence and Damage to Property
The dispute in Khaparganj rapidly escalated from heated arguments and verbal exchanges into physical assault and violent rioting. The unruly crowd targeted commercial establishments, nearby residential properties, and vehicles parked along the streets. Demonstrators also turned their aggression toward the City Kotwali police station, pelting stones and causing significant damage to the premises. The intense stone-pelting left roads strewn with debris and broken glass, creating chaos in the locality and causing injuries to several bystanders caught in the crossfire.
Assault on Security Forces and Injuries to Officers
Upon receiving reports of the violence, police units rushed to the scene to restore order, only to come under direct attack from the aggressive crowd. Due to the intensity of the stone-pelting, law enforcement personnel faced immense difficulty in stabilizing the situation. To disperse the violent mob, police initially resorted to a lathicharge and subsequently launched tear gas shells. During the conflict, several police officers, including Tarbahar Police Station In-charge (TI) Ravi Tiwari, sustained injuries from flying stones and were promptly transferred to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Reinforcements Summoned from Neighboring Districts
As tensions mounted rapidly, the local administration and police command mobilized immediate support. Recognizing the severity of the crisis, additional police forces were urgently summoned from the adjoining districts of Mungeli and Janjgir to reinforce security across sensitive pockets of Bilaspur. District Collector Sanjay Agarwal and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajnesh Singh arrived at the City Kotwali police station late at night to directly monitor the operations. Both senior officials remained on-site through the night, coordinating security measures and issuing tactical instructions to field officers.
Investigation via Video Footage and Official Appeals
At present, substantial police contingents remain deployed throughout the affected areas of Bilaspur, and officials report that the situation has been brought under control. Security forces have intensified night patrols in vulnerable neighborhoods to prevent any further escalation. Authorities have warned of strict legal action against all individuals involved in rioting and vandalism, emphasizing that CCTV camera feeds and video recordings are being rigorously analyzed to identify perpetrators. Furthermore, law enforcement officials cautioned that individuals circulating provocative content or rumors on social media platforms will face stern criminal prosecution. The administration has urged the public to disregard unverified reports and maintain community harmony.
