Traveling in and around the capital city of Raipur is set for a major transformation as Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari gave immediate approval to key infrastructure expansion proposals. During an extensive high-level meeting held in New Delhi on Tuesday, Raipur Member of Parliament Brijmohan Agrawal presented three detailed demand representations aimed at overhauling Chhattisgarh's road transit network. The central ministry responded by greenlighting two prominent highway projects that promise to relieve traffic congestion and boost industrial connectivity across the region.
Extending the Elevated Highway Directly Toward Swami Vivekananda Airport
Under the current blueprint of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), an elevated corridor is designated to run between Telibandha and Jora. However, local traffic conditions near the VIP Chowk T-junction created an urgent need for structural adjustments to prevent future bottlenecks. Spotting this potential bottleneck, MP Brijmohan Agrawal requested an additional elevated section extending 300 to 500 meters toward the airport corridor.
This strategic modification is designed to provide seamless vehicular movement for passengers traveling to Swami Vivekananda Airport. Beyond facilitating smoother airport transfers, the extended flyover will absorb substantial commuter volume, thereby drastically easing vehicle pressure on National Highway 53 (NH-53). Recognizing the public utility of the recommendation during their hour-long conference, Nitin Gadkari gave instant instructions for its formal authorization.
Raipur to Balodabazar Four-Lane Corridor Expanded Up to Sarangarh
Another significant decision emerged regarding the expansion of the NH-130B highway project. Prior to the meeting, official agencies were framing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) limited to upgrading the stretch between Raipur and Balodabazar into a four-lane highway. Citing growing commercial activities and public demand across neighboring districts, the Raipur parliamentarian advocated extending the four-lane widening work further to Sarangarh.
Accepting the rationale, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari instructed officials to incorporate the remaining section from Balodabazar to Sarangarh into the ongoing project scope. As a result, authorities will now draw up a comprehensive fresh DPR covering the entire broadened corridor, ensuring high-capacity road linkages across central and eastern Chhattisgarh.
Proposed Industrial Link and Expressways for Regional Freight
To support heavy commercial transit in the industrial hub of Balodabazar-Bhatapara, Brijmohan Agrawal tabled a proposal for a brand-new connecting road. The target corridor sits between NH-130 (Raipur-Bilaspur) and NH-130B (Raipur-Balodabazar), a sector that currently experiences intense commercial traffic surpassing 10,000 Passenger Car Units (PCU). Given the presence of dozens of major cement manufacturing facilities along this route, dedicated infrastructure is critical for freight movement. Nitin Gadkari assured that technical evaluations and feasibility checks would be conducted before taking subsequent steps.
The discussions also touched upon broader regional connectivity, including the construction of multiple flyovers along the busy Raipur-Durg-Bhilai artery. Furthermore, both leaders evaluated options to connect the upcoming Nagpur-Gondia Samruddhi Expressway into Chhattisgarh as a 6-lane high-speed highway, routing through Dongargarh and Kawardha before reaching Bilaspur and Raipur.
