The Bangladesh cricket team has hit another speedbump on their tour of Australia ahead of the upcoming two-match Test series scheduled to begin on August 13. During an ongoing three-day practice match against Cricket Australia XI in Darwin, key left-arm spinner Taijul Islam sustained a finger injury while batting on the opening day. The unexpected setback adds to a growing list of fitness concerns for the visiting side, who are already grappling with the absence of key frontline bowlers on this challenging tour.
Taijul Islam Sits Out Bowling Duties on Day Two
The three-day warm-up fixture saw Bangladesh post a total of 263 runs in their first innings. However, when the team took to the field on the second day to bowl against Cricket Australia XI, Taijul Islam was conspicuously absent from the bowling attack. The spinner suffered damage to his primary bowling finger while handling the bat on day one, prompting the medical team to immediately pull him out of action for the second day's play to prevent further aggravation.
The team management is maintaining a close watch on his recovery process. A comprehensive medical assessment and fresh injury check are scheduled for August 8 to determine the exact extent of the damage and establish whether Taijul will be fit in time for the opening Test match.
Official Medical Update from Team Physiotherapist
Providing clarity on the situation, Bangladesh team physiotherapist Bayjedul Islam Khan shared an official update regarding the spinner's condition. In a video statement issued to media representatives, the physio detailed the initial care provided to the bowler immediately following the incident.
Bayjedul Islam Khan explained that Taijul sustained the injury on his bowling finger while batting on the first day of the warm-up fixture. The medical staff promptly applied appropriate bandaging to protect the affected area. He noted that the player was rested on the second day as a precautionary measure, adding that the medical team would perform a thorough re-examination the following day to assess his progress.
Mounting Injury Woes and Litton Das's Return
The timing of Taijul Islam's injury is particularly troubling for Bangladesh as they prepare for a high-stakes Test series on Australian soil. The team's bowling depth has already been severely depleted due to prior fitness issues. Promising pace bowler Nahid Rana, who delivered impressive performances earlier this year, was ruled out of the entire tour after sustaining an injury. Similarly, left-arm fast bowler Shoriful Islam has also been sidelined from the series due to physical setbacks.
Amid these bowling challenges, the squad received a boost on the batting front. Experienced wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das has made a complete recovery from his injury issues and has been formally drafted back into the Test squad. With his fitness fully restored, Litton Das is expected to take his place in the playing XI for the first Test starting August 13, offering crucial stability to Bangladesh's batting order as they navigate a tough series.
