Luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover India has started assembling its widely popular luxury SUV, the Defender 110, at its manufacturing facility in Pune. The commencement of domestic assembly directly translates into a substantial price reduction of up to Rs 34 lakh on the vehicle's top-end variant. With prices dropping significantly, the automaker anticipates a substantial surge in consumer demand for the rugged off-roader across the Indian automotive market.
Current Pricing Structure Across 16 Variants in India
The company currently offers a comprehensive portfolio of 16 different variants of the Defender in the country. In Delhi, the existing on-road prices for the lineup range from Rs 1.24 crore for the entry models to Rs 3.02 crore for the highest specifications. Local assembly at the Pune facility directly cuts the price tag of the top model by up to Rs 34 lakh, making the premium off-roader significantly more competitive against rivals in the luxury SUV space.
Projected 20 Percent Sales Surge and Global Assembly Footprint
Following the sharp price revision, the automaker projects a 20 percent increase in sales for this high-demand vehicle. In an official statement issued on Tuesday, the company highlighted that India has become the very first market outside Europe to assemble the Defender locally. Meanwhile, global demand will continue to be serviced by the company's primary production base located in Nitra, Slovakia. That European facility remains the core production hub globally, maintaining manufacturing lines for models such as the Defender Octa, Defender 90, and Defender 130.
Over 9000 Deliveries Achieved in Three and a Half Years
Rajan Amba, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover India, pointed out that Indian buyers have purchased more than 9000 units of the Defender over the past three and a half years. This sales volume cements the vehicle's standing as the brand's single best-selling model in the country. Amba stated that rolling out production lines in Pune highlights the firm's strategic expansion roadmaps in India while underscoring solid faith in the execution capabilities of the local team and partner network.
Tata Group's Reimagine Strategy and Engine Options
Lennard Hoornik, Chief Commercial Officer at the Tata Group-backed automaker, explained that domestic assembly of the flagship vehicle represents a cornerstone of the overarching 'Reimagine' corporate strategy. Local assembly enables the brand to cater rapidly to domestic order books and streamline delivery timelines for waiting buyers. The company confirmed that Indian customers will be offered the vehicle in the X-Dynamic HSE trim, featuring 2.0-litre and 3.0-litre petrol powertrain choices alongside a 3.0-litre diesel engine option.
