England have brought fast bowling all-rounder Brydon Carse back into their squad right in the middle of the three match ODI series against India, after he successfully recovered from a wrist and elbow injury that had kept him sidelined. Having completed his rehabilitation programme, Carse is now fully fit and available for selection, giving England's think tank another seam bowling option to call upon for the rest of the series.
The road back from injury
Carse last featured in an ODI for England on November 1, 2025. He then played a Test match for the side in January 2026, but an injury picked up around that time forced him out of the team for an extended period. Rather than rushing back, he focused entirely on his recovery, working through a structured rehabilitation plan before easing his way back into competitive cricket through the domestic circuit.
Form in the Vitality Blast
Once he had cleared his fitness tests, Carse turned out in three matches for his side in the Vitality Blast 2026, picking up 4 wickets at an average of 20.25. That return appears to have been enough to satisfy the selectors, who have now moved to bring him straight back into the international fold. England confirmed the squad change on Tuesday, with Carse added to the group led by captain Harry Brook.
Why his numbers matter
Since making his ODI debut in 2021, Brydon Carse has steadily built a reputation as a dependable, genuine all-rounder. Across 30 ODIs, he has taken 34 wickets at an average of 40.44, a tally that includes one five-wicket haul in an innings. With the bat, batting down the order, he has also chipped in with 264 runs at an average of 17.60, numbers that show why England value him as more than just a specialist bowler.
Series schedule and what comes next
The opening match of the ODI series against India was played on Tuesday at Edgbaston. The two sides will meet again on July 16 at Sofia Gardens in Cardiff, before the series concludes on July 19 at Lord's in London. Carse's recall arrives right in the middle of this series, and England will be hoping the extra pace option strengthens their attack for the two matches still to be played.
Chasing the momentum from the T20 series
England had earlier swept India 4-0 in the preceding T20 series, and the team management is clearly keen to carry that same winning momentum into the 50-over format as well. Carse's raw pace, his knack for extracting bounce off most surfaces, and his ability to contribute useful runs lower down the order make him a valuable addition to that plan, particularly with bowlers like Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue already part of the group.
England's updated squad
England's updated squad for the series reads as follows, Harry Brook (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Brydon Carse, James Coles, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid, Joe Root and Josh Tongue.
