The opening semifinal clash in the Duleep Trophy featured an intense encounter between East Zone and North East Zone. In this match, the East Zone team led by Ishan Kishan defeated North East Zone by an innings and 210 runs to secure their spot in the next stage. Although East Zone vice-captain Vaibhav Suryavanshi failed to make an impact with the bat, getting dismissed for just 8 runs, he made a vital contribution to the victory by picking up two wickets with his bowling. Following the conclusion of the match, Vaibhav spoke about his unexpected bowling spell and shared the strategy behind his success.
Skipper was unaware of my wicket-taking ability
BCCI shared a video on their official social media account featuring Vaibhav Suryavanshi discussing the match dynamics. In the video, Vaibhav explained that at one point during the innings, the opposing batters were refusing to get out, prompting the team management to ask him to bowl 2 to 3 overs. Captain Ishan Bhai felt he was taking a huge risk by handing the ball to him, completely unaware that he could operate as a genuine wicket-taker. Vaibhav noted that his sole focus at that moment was to maintain disciplined line and length, knowing he had only three overs to make an impact regardless of how many wickets fell.
Enjoyment of bowling as a batter
The 15-year-old player further mentioned that picking up wickets with the ball brought immense joy, especially because his performance with the bat had fallen short in this particular fixture. Contributing to the team's cause through bowling provided a deeply satisfying feeling. He expressed that whenever a specialist batter manages to secure a wicket, the excitement is entirely unique. According to him, any batter asked about the experience would admit to enjoying bowling just as much as bowlers genuinely love stepping up to bat.
