The Big Bash League has never opened a season outside Australia in its entire history, until now. The complete fixture list for the BBL 2026-27 season has been released, confirming that the tournament will begin on December 12, with the final scheduled for January 26. For the first time ever, the opening match of the tournament will be played outside Australia, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
A Historic Opener in Chennai
The season opener will pit defending champions Perth Scorchers against Melbourne Renegades, and it will be played on Indian soil at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai rather than at any Australian venue. Even though the match is being staged in Chennai, Melbourne Renegades have been designated the home team for this historic fixture. The decision to stage the opening game in India was announced recently by PM Modi at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where he revealed that the BBL opener would be held in India.
44 Matches, Final Venue Still Undecided
The upcoming BBL season will feature a total of 44 matches, including the playoffs and the final. While the tournament begins in Chennai on December 12 and wraps up with the final on January 26, the venue for the final match has not been decided yet.
