Young Delhi Capitals batter Abishek Porel is in the headlines for reasons that have nothing to do with cricket. The West Bengal player has been accused by a medical student from Karnataka of exploiting her on the false promise of marriage. On Tuesday, a senior police officer said the woman has lodged a formal complaint against Porel at the Mogra police station in Hooghly district. Abishek himself hails from Chandannagar in the same district and is currently in Bengaluru. The 23-year-old has dismissed the allegations as completely false.
What the complaint says
The complainant says she had been in a relationship with Abishek Porel for three years and that the two had decided to get married. Around a year and a half ago, differences cropped up between them and the matter even reached the police station, but no formal complaint was filed at that time. On this occasion, the young woman arrived with her mother and registered an official complaint.
Senior officer visits the station, probe begins
As soon as the case came to light, Hooghly (Rural) Superintendent of Police Kunwar Bhushan Singh visited the Mogra police station. He discussed the matter with Inspector-in-charge Soumen Biswas and DSP (Crime) Abhijit Singh Mahapatra. Police have confirmed that the investigation is underway. As a senior officer put it, "A complaint has been registered. We have begun the investigation."
