A crucial adjustment has been announced for cricket enthusiasts and the competing squads at the upcoming multi-sport event in Japan. The organizers of the 2026 Asian Games, scheduled to take place in Aichi-Nagoya, have officially modified the starting times for the men's knockout cricket matches. According to the updated schedule, the afternoon matches will now commence 30 minutes earlier than originally planned, moving from the previous slot of 2:00 PM local time to a revised slot of 1:30 PM local Japanese time.
Revised Timings for India's Knockout Campaign
The Indian men's cricket team has secured a direct entry into the quarter-final stage of the tournament owing to their seeding. India is scheduled to play its opening match of the competition on September 28. Under the revised schedule, this crucial fixture will begin at 1:30 PM local Japanese time. Because Japan is three hours and thirty minutes ahead of Indian Standard Time (IST), cricket fans in India will be able to watch the live broadcast of the match starting at 10:00 AM IST. Furthermore, if the Indian team progresses through the tournament, their potential second semi-final match scheduled for October 1 and the highly anticipated gold medal match on October 3 will also start at the same revised time of 1:30 PM local time, which is 10:00 AM IST.
Morning Fixtures and Women's Matches Stay Unchanged
While the afternoon sessions have faced adjustments, the matches scheduled for the morning sessions will proceed as originally planned without any timing modifications. These games are set to begin at 9:00 AM local Japanese time, which translates to 5:30 AM IST. The morning schedule includes Pakistan's first quarter-final match on September 27, the first semi-final, and the bronze medal match. In addition to these, the initial matches featuring other participating nations such as Afghanistan, Japan, Nepal, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Oman will also take place at their pre-determined morning slots. The women's cricket tournament will also see no changes in its scheduling. The women's matches, which will also start directly from the quarter-finals, are set to be played at their original times of 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM local time.
The Reason Behind the Half-Hour Shift
The main factor driving this 30-minute advancement is the early onset of sunset in Japan during the autumn season. The cricket venue chosen for the tournament does not have artificial floodlights installed on the ground, making it absolutely necessary to conclude the matches entirely under natural daylight. Since Twenty20 matches can often run longer than expected due to various in-game factors, the organizers decided to move the start time forward to avoid any potential disruptions caused by bad light or fading visibility towards the end of the matches. Interestingly, officials from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) have reportedly not received any official written communication regarding this timing change, even though the revised schedule has already been updated and made public on the official website.
International T20 Match Scheduled Before the Games
In addition to the official tournament matches, India and Japan are also scheduled to face each other in a separate T20 International match on September 22. This match will take place at the Sano International Cricket Stadium and is not a part of the official Asian Games schedule. The warm-up international game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM local Japanese time, which corresponds to 9:30 AM IST. The main Asian Games will be held from September 19 to October 4, and there are high expectations for the Indian contingent to bring home the gold medal in the cricket event.
