England secured a comprehensive 56-run victory over India in the fifth and final T20 match, concluding the series with a decisive 4-0 margin. With this loss, the Indian team has relinquished its top ranking in the T20 format, allowing England to ascend to the premier position globally. England set a daunting target of 257 runs for the loss of three wickets, while India managed to reach 201 for eight in response. For India, Ishan Kishan scored 56 off 35 balls, and Tilak Varma contributed 53 off 25 deliveries. Sam Curran led the English bowling attack with three wickets, while Adil Rashid chipped in with two.
India's Uphill Battle
India's hopes effectively faded when vice-captain Tilak Varma was dismissed for 52, caught by Jos Buttler off the bowling of Josh Tongue, leaving the score at 189/6. Earlier, Shivam Dube departed after scoring 14 runs off 10 balls, falling to Sam Curran. His dismissal left half the Indian lineup in the pavilion, effectively tightening England's grip on the contest.
Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer's Stand
Ishan Kishan provided some resistance, scoring 56 runs with seven boundaries and two sixes before falling to Adil Rashid with the team score at 132/4. Prior to Shreyas Iyer’s exit for 28 runs at the hands of Liam Dawson, Kishan had brought up his half-century in just 27 balls. Following the loss of two wickets in the powerplay, Kishan and Iyer had steadied the ship, taking the score past the 100-run mark in nine overs, but the mounting required run rate eventually proved too much for the middle order.
England's Explosive Batting Display
England's total was fueled by a stellar performance from Jos Buttler and Harry Brook. Buttler blazed to 131 off 64 balls, hitting 12 fours and eight sixes. Harry Brook complemented him with an explosive 95 off 45 balls, featuring eight sixes and four boundaries. Shivam Dube eventually claimed Buttler's wicket in the 19th over, but by then, England had already reached 241 runs. Buttler had reached his personal century in just 51 deliveries.
Opening Phase and Toss Delay
England began their innings with the early loss of Phil Salt, who was caught by Abhishek Sharma off Prasidh Krishna. However, the subsequent partnership between Buttler and Brook left the Indian bowlers searching for answers. The match proceedings were affected by a delay in the team's arrival at the Rose Bowl stadium in Southampton due to heavy traffic. Consequently, the toss, originally scheduled for 6:30 PM IST, took place at 7:15 PM. Captain Shreyas Iyer elected to bowl first and introduced two changes to the side, bringing in Suryansh Shedge for Washington Sundar and Sanju Samson for Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
