India added another significant accolade to its athletics tally at the 2026 Asian Games as distance runner Gulveer Singh clinched the silver medal in the men's 10,000m competition. The 28-year-old athlete, hailing from Atrauli village in Uttar Pradesh, crossed the finish line in 28 minutes and 29.38 seconds during Friday's contest to seal second place. This podium finish marks his second career medal at the continental event, reinforcing his status among the elite endurance runners in the region.
Sustained Excellence Across Continental Editions
Gulveer Singh had previously made his mark on the Asian Games stage during the 2023 edition held in Hangzhou, China. In that race, he registered a timing of 28 minutes and 17.21 seconds to collect the bronze medal in the 10,000m category, finishing just behind compatriot Kartik Kumar, who captured silver. Returning to the continental showcase, Gulveer upgraded his previous bronze into a silver, proving his mettle against a competitive field and demonstrating remarkable consistency across major championships.
Historic Milestones at the Commonwealth Games
The distance specialist enjoyed a landmark outing earlier at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he scripted history for Indian track and field. Gulveer clocked 27 minutes and 49.78 seconds to claim silver in the men's 10,000m event, becoming the first athlete from the country ever to secure a medal in that specific discipline at the Commonwealth Games. He expanded his medal collection at the same multi-sport gathering by taking home bronze in the men's 5,000m race, completing a rare and historic double in athletics at a single edition.
Rise from National Circuits to Global Contention
The foundation of Gulveer's competitive trajectory began gaining national attention during the 2022 Federation Cup. His bronze medal finish in the 10,000m race at that domestic meet propelled him into the spotlight, establishing him as a promising contender in Indian distance running. His progress gained further momentum after his 2023 Hangzhou performance, laying the groundwork for his entry into top-tier international competitions.
Impact of Overseas Stint and National Records
A pivotal phase in Gulveer's development arrived in 2024 when he travelled to Colorado Springs in the United States for advanced preparation under the guidance of coach Scott Simmons. The structured training environment brought measurable improvements in his pace, endurance, and tactical execution. Following this training stint, Gulveer established national benchmarks across three track distances, setting standard marks of 7 minutes and 34.49 seconds in the 3,000m, 12 minutes and 59.77 seconds in the 5,000m, and 27 minutes and 0.22 seconds in the 10,000m.
